Position Summary
An Engagement
Manager is responsible for managing budgets, staff, activities, and
projects of the Engagement portfolio of business. This position is
considered a member of the Engagement leadership team and is responsible
for ensuring that their portfolio of work is completed on time and within
budget.
Details of Responsibilities
General Essential Job Duties:
Substantially contribute to:
- The Engagement leadership team,
interacting with the other members of the team to help set priorities,
resolve issues, recommend new development projects, manage risk, and
manage change.
- Interacting
regularly with the Consortium’s community.
- Identifying and developing new
funding opportunities.
- Developing
projects and budget related documentation for delivery to the NSF, Board
of Directors, Advisory Committees, etc. This includes ad hoc reports on
the performance and trends of projects or functions managed as well as
providing relevant metrics for quarterly and annual reports.
- Preparing annual and multi-year
program plans and resource needs (staff, consultants, and budget
requirements) for their activities and projects.
Take lead
or major role in:
- Managing
Engagement resources (staff and infrastructure) in an efficient and
effective manner.
- Collaborating
as a company and community-wide subject matter expert.
- Establishing and enforcing
relevant procedures that align with operating standards
and mission.
- Arranging
for and implementing formal and informal training (including technical,
professional development and internal training) to ensure staff understand
and actively support policies and procedures.
- Other duties may be assigned as
necessary for the successful operation of the business.
Leadership and Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This
position has supervisory responsibility for the staff members who are
direct reports.
- This
position may oversee projects with contributions from staff who are
not direct reports.
- Manage staff by
recruiting, training and coaching employees, communicating
job expectations and appraising their performance.
- Lead long-term project teams,
including coordination with stakeholders and assignment of tasks to team
members.
- Interact effectively and
efficiently with EarthScope staff, community and partnering
organizations.
- Foster a professional culture
through the use of strong interpersonal skills, verbal and written
communications.
- Communicate
clearly and effectively with other team members to ensure tasks are
completed on time and with best practices.
- Take
an active role in promoting and fostering a respectful work environment.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
& Experience Requirements:
- PhD
degree in geoscience, computer science, physical science, engineering,
education, or related field AND six (6) years of relevant experience of
which four (4) years include work as a manager.
OR
- Master’s
degree in geoscience, computer science, physical science, engineering,
education, or related field AND seven (7) years of relevant experience of
which five (5) years include work as a manager or seven (7) years of
relevant experience of which three (3) years include work as a manager and
certification from a recognized leadership or management program.
OR
- Bachelor’s
degree in geoscience, computer science, physical science, engineering,
education, or related field AND eight (8) years of relevant experience of
which six (6) years include work as a manager or six (6) years of relevant
experience of which four (4) years include work as a manager and
certification from a recognized leadership or management program.
OR
- Ten
(10) years of relevant experience of which eight (8) years include work as
a manager.
Preferred Skills:
- An
understanding of earth sciences, earth science data, and the earth science
community.
Assignment-specific Position Summary
Positions in
Engagement will include job specific addenda that specify assignment-specific
duties, knowledge, skills and abilities pertinent to the position.
This is in addition to the general position description requirements associated
with the job title.
Assignment-specific Essential Duties:
- Oversee
programs that provide experiences for developing geoscience skills:
Internship programs, “Field Schools,” program alumni networks.
- Ensure assigned programs align
with EarthScope Strategic Goals and NSF NGF priorities.
- Actively monitor the
budget related to assigned program activities and make recommended
adjustments to the VP.
- Directly
supervise and coach staff involved in developing and executing programming
to enhance geoscience learning and skills.
- Attend
Engagement Activities Advisory Committee (EAAC) meetings when assigned by
the VP.
- Manage
oversight of contracts related to assigned program activities.
- Other duties may be assigned as
necessary for the successful operation of the business.

Other Requirements:
- Appropriate availability
consistent with EarthScope established practices and norms;
hours may exceed 40 hours per week, particularly when traveling.
