Dear all,
The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford is advertising *two* 30-month postdoc positions
for a NERC-funded project to study the Earth’s mantle transition zone. The positions are both offered full time with flexible start dates between 1st October 2026 and 1st January 2027.
The PRISM-MTZ project specifically aims to produce novel constraints on the bulk structure and discontinuity topographies of the MTZ by developing a joint finite-frequency inference framework for normal-mode, surface-wave and body-wave data. The use
of BG-SOLA inference methods enables us to quantify trade-offs between velocity and discontinuity topography besides providing model estimates jointly with resolution and uncertainty information. The produced seismological constraints will be combined with
results from TerraNeo, a newly developed, coupled mineralogical-geodynamic framework, to estimate fluxes of heat and material across the MTZ.
The ideal candidates will have knowledge of mantle structure and computational seismology as well as experience with seismic data analyses and inversions. The work will involve adapting existing and developing new analysis and inverse methodologies within a
finite-frequency framework and working with interdisciplinary experts to interpret seismological constraints. The posts are open to candidates of all nationalities. The successful candidates will work in the DEEPSCAPE group in Oxford and collaborate with experts
in Strasbourg and Cambridge.
The deadline for applications is midday on 20th May 2026, and interviews are expected to take place
10-12th June 2026.
I will be attending the British Seismology Meeting in Leeds as well as EGU in Vienna in a few weeks time if you want to discuss these opportunities. Otherwise, please feel free to contact me by email (
paula.ko...@earth.ox.ac.uk).
Best wishes,
Paula
