ISTI is seeking to hire a Seismologist for our Seismic Operations Group. This position will be involved in day-to-day operations of multiple real-time seismic monitoring networks from local to regional scale. ISTI provides seismological and other geophysical science support to our customers. We have expertise in earthquake seismology, and have provided scientific support and applications development in other geophysics fields as well (e.g. radionuclide detection, geomagnetism, geodesy, atmospheric science, tsunamis, hurricanes). In seismology, we provide turnkey seismic networks and services for earthquake monitoring at the surface or via borehole systems using our advanced processing techniques.
Responsibilities50% Plans, designs, integrates, develops, tests, deploys, configures, operates, maintains and documents advanced geophysical data processing and archiving software for earthquake monitoring and research applications. This includes the processing of seismic and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data.
40% Performs complex geophysical data analysis and tests of existing geophysical data processing software, in line with existing and future needs of ISTI. Analyzes and integrates new and complex types of datasets. Resolves complex technical issues with performance of real-time processing pipelines requiring in-depth understanding of the overall system.
10% Performs seismic analyst duties on a daily basis to review real time seismic catalogs. Some 24x7 duty seismologist responsibilities.
Bachelor's degree in geophysics/computer science (or equivalent experience/training).
Advanced knowledge on the design, development, testing, integration, configuration, operation and maintenance of complex geophysical processing, archiving and state-of-health monitoring software.
Knowledge of Python programming languages and environments, including familiarity with seismology specific packages (Obspy)
Excellent project organizational skills
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
Self-motivated, works independently, able to learn effectively and to meet deadlines.
Demonstrated complex problem-solving skills.
Knowledge of seismic processing pipeline components, SeisComP, Earthworm/AQMS
Knowledge of machine learning algorithms is desirable.
Master’s Degree in Geophysics/Computer Science.
Experience with software repository (git) and CICD infrastructure.
Experience with double difference high precision relocation methods and software
Familiarity with seismic instrument responses and methods for evaluating sensor performance
Experience with earthquake detection, association, and location methods.
Experience with fiber optic methodologies and using DAS for seismic event analysis
Familiarity with seismic field work and operations would be helpful.
Pipeline Management: Administer, tune, and troubleshoot seismic acquisition software to ensure reliable earthquake detection and magnitude calculations.
Data Archiving & QA: Monitor the state-of-health of the network, perform instrument response corrections, and archive waveform/event metadata.
Scripting & Automation: Develop, test, and maintain data processing tools using Python and the ObsPy framework to accelerate domain-specific scientific workflows.
Example: Operate and maintain existing software to design seismic networks from local to regional scale, modeling detection thresholds using forward modeling of phase amplitudes
Systems Integration: Bridge continuous seismic data flows into custom analysis GUIs, automated alerts, and backend databases.
