Position
Summary
The Science
Communication Associate I is responsible for leading internal
technical communications, and/or the daily and strategic
communications, and leading community communications and informal education and
outreach.

General
Essential Job Duties:
Common Job
Functions
- Assist with maintaining asset
repository (technical documentation, photo, video, etc).
- Work internally across programs
to assist with the development and revisions of materials,
as appropriate.
- Assist with managing
branding documentation and ensuring brand standards and styles are met and
used by staff.
Internal
Job Functions
- Assist in identifying and
fixing gaps in misidentification of information, documentation,
and photo archives.
- Assist with research of
technical records and assist with providing recommendations for
making records more accessible to staff.
- Research control access and
provides recommendations to management.
- Assist with establishing
document handling protocol, workflow, and work procedures.
- Update
and maintain SOPs and other related materials using standard
templates.
- Provide some aspects of technical
writing support for SOPs and other various
types of documentation critical to operations.
- Assist with data entry and
existing document organization
- Assist with training
staff in documentation organization principles and quality
standards.
External
Job Functions
- Recommend, implement and maintain website
design.
- Assist with maintaining dynamic
and vibrant content on website.
- Work collaboratively with data
services staff responsible for technical website support.
- Assist with social media
channels and content.
- Assist with the development
of annual communication program plans.
- Assist with implementation
of communications strategy.
- Write news items for broad
distribution.
- Assist with geophysical
event responses on the website and in social media.
- Assist with the creation of
videos, animations and other digital content featuring geophysical
concepts.
- Assist with collaborations
with partner organizations to promote better public understanding of
geophysics and geoscience.
- Assist with creating
promotional materials and manage promotional materials inventory
- Assist with marketing and
promotional materials, both print and digital.
- Represent EarthScope with
exhibit booths at scientific conferences.
Other
- Assist with efforts to
translate materials into Spanish and other languages as needed.
- Other duties may be assigned as
necessary for the successful operation of the business.
Specialized
Essential Job Duties:
- Represent EarthScope at
local outreach opportunities.
- May coordinate outreach efforts
in exhibition halls at scientific conferences.
- Present at scientific
and education meetings and conferences.
Leadership
and Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position does not
have supervisory responsibility.
- Work collaboratively and interact
effectively and efficiently with EarthScope staff, community and
partnering and external organizations.
- Foster a professional
culture through the use of strong interpersonal skills, verbal
and written
communications.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with other team
members to ensure tasks are completed on time and with best
practices.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
& Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
professional experience in geoscience, geology, communications,
journalism, or related field
- At least six months of direct
professional or internship experience in technical writing, media
relations, journalism, science communications or
related field.
Preferred
Skills:
- Master’s degree or equivalent
professional experience in a Geoscience discipline with experience in
secondary / college science classroom, professional development, or
informal education.
- Experience in graphic
design.
- Experience in video
production.
- Scientifically literate in
geosciences and geodetic science.
- Familiar and have experience with
communications technologies in the areas of document management, print
graphics, web design and content, audio-visual
Assignment-specific Position Summary
Positions in
Engagement Services will include job specific addenda that specify
assignment-specific duties, knowledge, skills and abilities pertinent
to the position. This is in addition to the general Position Description

Assignment-specific Essential Duties:
- Website
content generation and maintenance
- Creation
of digital media content including, but not limited to, video
production
- Assist with social media
execution
- Assist with maintenance of
the facility community bibliography
- In
coordination with Sci Comm Associate II staff, develop summaries of
facility supported science in a variety of formats including, but not
limited to, video, written word, and slide decks
- Other
duties may be assigned as necessary for the successful operation of the
business.

- Experience communicating science
to technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience
creating and editing web pages with CMS
- Familiar
with multiple social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook,
LinkedIn, and BlueSky
- Proficiency in creating
videos
- Expert
user of Google suite of tools

Requirements:
- Appropriate availability
