Overview:  

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

We are seeking a Geophysicist Associate Staff Member who will support the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division in the National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing technical expertise with the following major duties and responsibilities:

  • Joint inversion of multiple geophysical datasets with the aim of imaging the 3D crustal and upper mantle structure of the Earth.
  • Implementation of inversion methods for earth structure imaging using machine learning algorithms.
  • Broad application of data analysis methodologies to vast seismo-acoustic datasets.
  • Engage programmatically and technically across the division, directorate, and laboratory to help sustain and grow ORNL impact on nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear security missions.
  • Support senior staff in the development and execution of projects that provide valued and timely deliverables supporting the National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) and nonproliferation customers.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of the institution values and ethics.
  • Abide by all environmental, safety, health and quality requirements and implement practices per ORNL’s Standards-based Management System (SBMS).
  • Interface with customers and collaborators to positiviely represent the capabilities of the Collection Science and Engineering Group as well as the capabilities of the broader division, directorate, and laboratory organizations.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Geophysics  or a related field and a minimum of 3 years experience. A combination of education and experience may also be considered.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience on seismo-acoustic monitoring of industrial facilities 
  • Experience in inverse theory and geophysical inversion as well as the processing of large and varied datasets, such as seismic body waves arrival times, surface wave dispersion, teleseismic receiver functions, and gravity anomalies.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of problems, and theability to determine and understand the broader context of his or her research.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory  
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Special Requirements:

Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
