The USGS Earthquake Science Center seeks an EDGE Computer Scientist to join the ShakeAlert® Earthquake Early Warning team.

Bring your professional scientific and developer skills to create novel computational solutions and enhance the ongoing improvement of the dynamic and evolving ShakeAlert System!

This permanent position is offered in Pasadena, California, at the GS-14 level (salary range $142,094 - $184,725 per year). EDGE Computer Scientists research and develop new or improved products, processes, and techniques across a variety of platforms. The incumbent will work directly with the ShakeAlert team and generally be responsible for:

·        Participating in the design and development of the ShakeAlert system including the overall system architecture, establishing performance standards, and system testing and monitoring.

·        Researching and developing new methods for the integration of novel seismic and geodetic sensor data from low-cost sensors.

·        Providing technical leadership in the creation of novel computational solutions to improve Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system performance.

·        Assessing current EEW algorithm performance and identifying areas for improvement.

·        Exploring machine learning approaches, novel database schemes, use of cloud computing for data processing, and improved visualization of results.

·        Developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting systems to originate alerts and send them via the national Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA).
