The Department of Physics at the University of Alberta, Canada, invites applications for three postdoctoral research positions. The successful applicants will carry out research in the group of Professor Mirko van der Baan on the topic of (1) distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), (2) geomechanics, and (3) applied seismology, in particular microseismicity. They will work on theory and applications of microseismic monitoring of underground carbon storage and hydraulic fracturing of low-permeability hydrocarbon reservoirs.
Ongoing research involves computational modeling using discrete element methods, pore-pressure diffusion, high-resolution hypocenters and source mechanisms, ambient-noise seismic interferometry, and low-frequency strain deformations due to fracture propagation.
General information and application procedure
These postdoctoral positions are available immediately. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to four years. The successful applicant will become part of the Consortium for Distributed and Passive Sensing, which is sponsored by hydrocarbon operators and service companies. There will be a strong interaction with the sponsors.
Applicants should hold a PhD and have research experience in earthquake and/or applied seismology, geomechanics, reservoir simulation, or distributed sensing. They should possess strong written and verbal communications in English.
Please apply through the University of Alberta Career Portal (https://apps.ualberta.ca/careers/posting/2584) and submit the following in a single PDF document:
Information of the department can be found at https://www.physics.ualberta.ca/ and on the research consortium at https://www.microseismic-research.net/
Evaluation of applications will commence: 20 Aug 2025.
The University of Alberta is committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from all qualified persons. We encourage women; First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons; members of visible minority groups; persons with disabilities; persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression; and all those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas and the University to apply.
