We would like to draw your attention to an AGU Fall Meeting late-breaking session on the recent 2026 Venezuela earthquake sequence:
S030 - The 2026 Venezuela Earthquake Sequence: Insights from Seismology and Beyond

In June 2026, a large, complex earthquake sequence struck north-central Venezuela along the boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates. The earthquake sequence has caused serious loss of life and economic damage, and its impacts are being felt far beyond the seismological community. At the same time, the event raises important scientific questions because of its source complexity, the range of initial source interpretations from different agencies and observatories, and its implications for regional tectonics and seismic hazard.
This session aims to bring together the seismological, geodetic, geological, and engineering communities working to understand this event and its broader tectonic setting. We welcome contributions related to the 2026 Venezuela earthquake sequence, including studies of the source process, rupture and fault geometry, deformation and stress changes, aftershock behavior, ground motions, and the structure and seismic hazard of this plate-boundary region. Work placing the sequence in the context of regional tectonics and historical seismicity is also encouraged.
We especially encourage submissions from scientists based in Venezuela and the surrounding region, as well as researchers with strong regional expertise. We encourage potential presenters, especially students, postdocs, and early-career researchers under 35, to explore travel grants and registration waivers available through AGU. We hope this session can offer an opportunity for local and regional scientists to present their work at AGU.
