Improving social ecological resilience to tsunami-induced flooding in Hawaiʻi
by Scott Fisher, Ph.D. - Director of ʻĀina Stewardship | Hawaiʻi Land Trust

Abstract
Lying near the center of the Pacific ʻRing of Fireʻ Hawaiʻi is particularly vulnerable to tsunami inundation.  This presentation introduces research from two locations on the island of Maui where historic and paleo-tsunami research has been ongoing for the past three years.  These sites include the Nuʻu Refuge in the Kaupō district on the south east coast, and the Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge in Wailuku district, on the north west coast.  Both locations, lying at opposite ends of the island, have extensive evidence of tsunami inundation dating back several centuries to the ʻōiwi wale (pre-1778) period, as demonstrated from both sedimentary evidence, as well as a review of written accounts, including Hawaiian language resources.  This presentation will also introduce the Hawaiʻi Land Trustʻs design and implementation of a ʻforested bioshieldʻ at Nuʻu, a deliberately designed native forest meant to slow both wave velocity and reduce sediment transportation during a future tsunami event.
