The Department of Geology and Geophysics (GG) at the University of Utah invites researchers with an interest in applied seismology and related interdisciplinary research to consider a research stay with the Department Faculty and/or Department Research Faculty. Visiting scientists are invited with the goal of developing collaborative research. We encourage applications from members of groups under-represented in the geosciences and related disciplines.

This program is funded by the Applied Seismic Research Endowment: “Endowment to support research in applied seismic studies, especially seismic tomography.”

Applicants should contact department researchers in advance of submitting an application.

Successful proposals are typically designed in collaboration with your potential host at GG. We particularly encourage proposals that involve multiple GG researchers and are interdisciplinary in nature. Without the support of a department researcher, your application is unlikely to succeed.

Research visits are expected to last one to six months.

The funds will cover travel-related expenses (up to 3000 $) and lodging (3000 $ per month).

Applications will be accepted from 1-September to 30-November of every year for visits planned in the following year.

The applicant should provide a short rationale (two-page limit) for the research visit specifying department collaborations, along with a letter of support from GG host.

The GG executive committee will review the proposals and will rank the applications according to the following

• Length of visit

• Departmental collaborations

• Research proposal

• Potential to include researchers across the department

• Contribution to departmental activities, e.g. provide a seminar or a short course in the applicant’s field of expertise

• Letter of support from GG host
