EarthScope staff and community,

After a comprehensive and rigorous search process that  began in December 2025, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Jake Walter has joined EarthScope as the newly appointed Global Networks Senior Program Manager.  Dr. Walter starts today on a part-time basis and will join the Instrumentation Services Senior Management team full-time in early May, when his obligations in his current position conclude.

Dr. Walter most recently served as State Seismologist at the Oklahoma Geological Survey and as affiliate faculty at the University of Oklahoma. In that role, he led Oklahoma’s statewide earthquake monitoring network, strengthening its operations through federal grant support and renewed state investment. His research interests center on earthquake seismology, induced seismicity, geohazards, and glaciology. Over his career, he has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and led externally funded research projects supported by NSF, DOE, NASA, and FEMA. He has also been actively engaged in science outreach, leading and participating in community and educational initiatives across the state. Based in Oklahoma City, he enjoys hiking, fishing, and snowboarding with his wife and three daughters.

I would like to thank Annie Zaino, Global Field Team sub-unit manager within the Field Operations Department for acting as the Interim Global Networks Program Manager since the retirement of Bob Busby in early April 2025.  Annie did an awesome job managing the transition of the NASA GGN and NSF GSN programs, setting us on a path for continued success all while still doing her real job as Global Field Team manager.  Dan McNamara, the Instrumentation Services Coordinator, will continue to support administrative and programmatic responsibilities for Global Networks as the Interim Global Networks Senior Program Manager until Jake starts full-time.

Please join me in welcoming Jake to the EarthScope team.

Regards,

Glen S. Mattioli, Ph.D.
