We would like to invite you to submit an abstract to the AGU 2026 Fall
Meeting session: MR009. Pre-, co- and post-rupture processes across
multiple scales to be held in in San Francisco, CA & Online, 7-11
December 2026

Session Description

The session focuses on the processes preceding, accompanying and
following dynamic and slow ruptures. Rupture nucleation and propagation
in fault zones, volcanoes, glacier systems, and landslides are governed
by multiple factors including material properties, in situ stress and
fluid pressure conditions, time-dependent deformation and pre-existing
heterogeneities or defects. Geophysical and geological observations
across fault systems at multiple scales allow to quantitatively
characterize the nucleation and propagation of ruptures and to assess
the thermo-hydro-mechanical properties of shear zones. At the laboratory
scale, new experiments are able to investigate the 3D microstructure
evolution of a deforming rock and to quantify the entire strain field.
Concurrent numerical modeling efforts assist laboratory observations by
unraveling the governing physical processes. Our aim is to integrate
field, laboratory, and modeling investigations to address the
multi-scale deformation mechanisms before, during and after major slow
and fast ruptures
