Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to submit an abstract to our AGU 2026 session: T006 – From Outer Rise to Megathrust Rupture: New Frontiers in Subduction Zone Science.

Abstract deadline: August 5, 2026

Although this session focuses on the recent IODP and IODP³ Expeditions in the Tohoku region to foster cross-expedition scientific connections, we encourage submissions from all global subduction systems and particularly welcome interdisciplinary studies that bridge drilling observations with onshore and offshore records.

We solicit contributions addressing topics including:

  • Incoming-plate modification and outer-rise processes

  • Petit-spot magmatism and its potential influence on rupture nucleation and propagation

  • Megathrust and slip-to-the-trench behavior

  • Fault/rock properties and fluid-flow processes

  • Sedimentary and stratigraphic records of past earthquakes and tsunamis

  • Near-surface features linked to long-term earthquake and tsunami histories

  • Geologic field observations, geophysics, geochemistry, experiments, and modeling

Our invited speakers are IODP Exp. 405's Jamie Kirkpatrick and IODP³ Exp. 503's Stephen Bowden.

Please consider submitting an abstract and sharing this invitation with colleagues and students whose work may fit the session.

AGU 2026 will be held 7–11 December 2026 in San Francisco, CA. We look forward to seeing you then!

Best,
Cat Ross, Charlotte Pizer, Alysa Fintel, Kaitlin Schaible, Michi Strasser
