Opportunities for Graduate Students at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada
The Department of Earth, Energy, and the Environment at the University of Calgary is recruiting graduate students to join the Global Seismology Group. Our group is currently seeking students interested in degrees at the MS and PhD levels. Our current research
is focused on global tectonics, geothermal resources, natural hazards, CO2 sequestration, and continental evolution. Each of these projects includes field campaigns that will collect new data as well as analysis of that data in the lab. Student opportunities
include analysis involving ambient noise, receiver functions, surface waves, earthquake detection, inverse methods, time series analysis, and machine learning.
Ongoing projects at the University of Calgary involve close collaboration with researchers at the Yukon Geological Survey, Geological Survey of Canada, Carbon Management Canada, and industry partners. Students with degrees in geophysics, geology, physics, math,
computer science, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Our research involves the use of high-performance computing resources for processing large data sets.
Students in the Global Seismology group are expected to work within a team environment and have regular interactions with faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and other graduate students.
The desired skills for the student positions are:
- Experience in geophysical data processing and analysis
- Strong programming skills (experience using Python, MATLAB, C, Fortran or similar)
- Using HPC clusters
- Experience carrying out research projects
- Fieldwork
