Dear Colleagues,

We kindly invite submissions to the AGU session T016: On the Seismicity of “Stable” Continental Regions: The April 2024 New Jersey Earthquake and Beyond, due July 31 at 11:59 PM EDT.

https://agu.confex.com/agu/agu24/prelim.cgi/Session/229660

Invited Speakers:

Alexandros Savvaidis (UT Austin)

Erin Hightower (NASA JPL/Caltech)

Description:

On April 5, 2024, an M4.8 earthquake struck New Jersey and was felt across most of the eastern U.S. – a reminder of the seismic hazard associated with the reactivation of ancient tectonic structures away from active plate boundaries in stable continental regions (SCR) often close to densely populated cities. Due to extremely slow deformation rates in SCR, the modern instrumented record provides limited insight into ongoing geophysical processes. Despite fundamental observational constraints, it is essential to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms generating earthquakes in SCR to estimate the frequency, magnitude, and location of the events better. We invite studies applying interdisciplinary approaches to fill these knowledge gaps in the New Jersey earthquake source region, other parts of the Central and Eastern U.S., and similar tectonic regimes worldwide. Methods include but are not limited to seismology, tectonic geodesy, potential fields, geomechanical experiments, numerical modeling, and field structural geology.

We Look forward to seeing you in December :).

Sincerely,

Rasheed Ajala
