G024 - Transient Deformation and Creep Processes in the Earthquake Cycle

Session Description:
Transient deformation and aseismic slip processes play a fundamental role in the earthquake cycle, yet their spatiotemporal characteristics and underlying physics remain incompletely understood. Advances in geodetic techniques, including GNSS, InSAR, and creepmeters, together with seismic and geological observations, have revealed a wide spectrum of transient phenomena such as creep, slow slip events, afterslip, and postseismic relaxation. These aseismic phenomena can occur spontaneously or be triggered or induced by tectonic, environmental, or anthropogenic activities. Aseismic slip is also sometimes accompanied by other faulting processes, such as repeating earthquakes and tremors. This session aims to bring together studies that investigate the spatiotemporal evolution, mechanisms, and implications of transient deformation across diverse tectonic settings. We welcome contributions that utilize geodetic, seismic, and geological data, as well as numerical and analytical modeling and laboratory experiments to better understand the physical processes governing the spectrum of aseismic fault slip behavior.
