Instrument Center Subaward Staff Join EarthScope

For the past 25 years the PASSCAL Instrument Center has been hosted by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico, operating under a subaward from EarthScope (formerly from IRIS).

Now known as the EarthScope Primary Instrument Center (EPIC), this facility is the hub for both seismology and geodesy instrumentation activities, particularly those activities supporting the National Science Foundation-funded SAGE and GAGE awards.

As part of this transition, the existing staff recently became direct EarthScope Consortium employees. They are continuing their current work at the EPIC uninterrupted, but we can now officially welcome them into the organization!

You'll notice some changes on the EPIC website.

GPS 🤝 InSAR

To facilitate calibration of InSAR ground displacement measurements, NASA JPL corner reflectors have been deployed next to NOTA stations along the San Andreas Fault. Watch this video to learn more about the project!

CRESCENT

EarthScope Consortium will be one of 16 institutions participating in the new NSF-funded Cascadia Region Earthquake Science Center (CRESCENT), which will study the Cascadia subduction zone and improve earthquake resiliency and preparedness across the Pacific Northwest.

It's quiet... too quiet

Seismic monitoring of Yellowstone’s Steamboat Geyser showed that signals appeared weaker in winter—because of snow cover. Cool research led by an alum of one of our internship programs!

Cascadia Slow Slip

Two summer science communication interns wrote this introductory explainer on the episodic tremor and slip behavior observed in the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

New Tectonics Animations

We have some new videos illustrating and explaining regional tectonic settings, like this one focused on the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone.
