Research Mentor Training - Enhancing Research Mentorship for a Stronger Geoscience Workforce!

Date: May 22 & 23, 2025 (09:00-11:00 PDT each day)

Workshop Organizers: Gabriela Noriega (SCEC) & Shannon Fasola (CRESCENT)

Effective research mentoring relationships are critical to developing the next generation of geoscientists. Studies have demonstrated that training for both mentors and mentees enhances their knowledge, skills, and behaviors, leading to more productive mentoring relationships. Moreover, culturally responsive interactions between mentors and mentees empower mentees to advance in their research careers, equipping them to become future mentors, scientific leaders, and collaborative research team members. This progression is vital for developing a well-trained, engaged, and diverse geoscience workforce.

Based on the Entering Mentoring curricula developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experience in Research, this training is designed to help mentors develop skills for engaging in productive, culturally responsive, research mentoring relationships-- relationships that optimize the success of both mentors and mentees. In this evidence-based, interactive workshop, participants will delve into various approaches and resources to enhance their mentoring practices.

Key Focus Areas

  • Aligning Expectations
  • Reflecting on Diversity & Establishing a Practice of Inclusion
  • Assessing Understanding
  • Maintaining Effective Communication

Who Should Attend? This workshop is open to researchers at all career stages who are interested in strengthening their mentoring skills. Priority consideration will be given to postdoctoral researchers and early-career faculty (within five years of transition), but all interested mentors are encouraged to apply. For more information and to register, please visit the workshop website.

NOTE: If you and/or your department are considering applying for the AGU Bridge Program, please note that mentorship training experiences like this are highly valued.
