Cloud Update

GeoLab cloud compute hub opening to all users in June

After a great deal of development and pilot testing, we’re ready to open up GeoLab, our JupyterHub environment. We’ll be throwing open the doors on June 2 after a special interest group session on the topic as part of the virtual 2026 NSF NGF Community Science Conference.

GeoLab provides researchers and educators with an easy-to-use cloud environment for working with data in the NSF NGF archive. You can explore and visualize data, prototype even the largest data processing efforts, and build notebooks your students can run without wasting time configuring software environments. Documentation and courses will be available to help you get started and gain skills. This is the initial launch of a platform that will evolve and grow over time with community feedback and contributions.

At our special interest group session, we’ll provide an update on GeoLab’s development, highlight some use cases with example demos, walk you through those onboarding resources, and answer questions. We’ll recap this information in an update after the conference, but we encourage you to attend if you’re able. (Registered attendees will be able to watch a recording of the session if they have a conflict at that time. Visit the conference registration page for a schedule and more information.)

We look forward to seeing how you put GeoLab to work for your science and teaching!
