Hello Seismologists!
We invite graduate students to participate in the upcoming Seismology Student Workshop (SSW), to be held October 18-20, 2026 at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. The Abstract Submission form is now OPEN and available until June 10, 2026. This workshop is completely student-run and organized, with the aim of bringing together graduate students who conduct research in any discipline of seismology or earthquake science. This workshop is organized by and for graduate students, and we encourage advisors to notify their students about this opportunity!
This is the first time that SSW will be held at the University of Hawai’i, and we intend to build on the success of our previous workshops by providing a friendly environment that fosters in-depth scientific discussion and networking. Due to our location this year in the Pacific, we especially encourage applications by students with interest or work relevant to the Pacific and its communities.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship from the EarthScope & Seismological Society of America, we will be able to cover the cost of accommodation, meals, and refreshments each day during the workshop. Further, thanks to sponsorship from the Cascadia Region Earthquake Science Center (CRESCENT), two Professional Development Fellowships will be competitively awarded to SSW applicants to further cover travel costs (Applicants are expected to apply separately for consideration for these fellowships). For questions regarding CRESCENT’s Professional Development Fellowship, please contact Shannon Fasola (CRESCENT; sfa...@uoregon.edu).
We have also partnered with the East-West Center, where participants will be staying throughout the workshop. Participants will also be considered East-West Center alumni by participating in this event, enabling access to a network of 70,000+ alumni worldwide. We will also plan to offer a Raspberry Shake RS1D via raffle, sponsored by Raspberry Shake.
The format will be a series of talks and poster sessions over the course of three days. Other programming in the works includes a field trip to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a career panel, a networking/outreach event, and more. For more information, please visit our website, find us on Facebook, Instagram, or reach out to us at seismo....@gmail.com.
If you are interested in attending, please complete and submit the Online Application Form. A title, abstract, and statement of impact must be submitted to be considered for an oral presentation or poster session. The application deadline is June 10, 2026. Registration fees are expected to be no more than $150. Please feel free to forward this to other students who might be interested.
Finally, we would also like to encourage you to apply for the SSA Optical Seismology Topical Meeting, immediately preceding our event on October 13-16, 2026 in Kona, Hawai'i. Applications for that meeting are now open here until June 1.
We hope to see you in October!
