Abstract:

Earth Science is the least diverse STEM subject, and poor fieldwork practice has been identified as a key barrier to diversification. Most field researchers will have experienced problematic behaviour and practice whilst in the field that goes unreported, mainly because the small groups and power structures involved lead to little accountability. In light of these issues, and the growing body of literature on fieldwork practice that is emerging, COMET began compiling a set of research fieldwork guidelines in 2020. In this webinar, I will introduce the guidelines and show how they could be used to change our fieldwork practice to make it safer, more inclusive, and more equitable for everyone involved.
