Title: CODE-GEO: An Undergraduate Coding Program Aimed at Creating a More Diverse and Inclusive Geosciences Community

Presenter: D. Sarah Stamps, PhD, Associate Professor, Virginia Tech

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Abstract: In an effort to create a more diverse and inclusive community of geoscientists, the CODE-GEO program (Collecting Observations and Data Encoding in the Geosciences) was developed in 2018 at Virginia Tech in the Department of Geosciences. CODE-GEO is a week-long coding camp for undergraduate students from underrepresented groups in STEM with little to no coding experience that has been taught in-person four times and virtually twice. Participants gain fundamental coding skills applied to real-world volcanic hazards assessment and daily training sessions in cultural effectiveness. This presentation will discuss the evolution of this CODE-GEO program, several successes, and provide information on how the curriculum could be adopted or adapted for one’s own uses.  More info at: https://sites.google.com/vt.edu/codegeo/home
