Dear Colleagues,

Together with co-editors Corentin Caudron (Universite libre de Bruxelles) and Silvio De Angelis (University of Liverpool), and topic coordinator Dirk Metz (CTBTO), we have organized a special article collection in the journal Frontiers in Earth Science devoted to the submarine eruption of Hunga volcano, Tonga, on January 15, 2022.

The eruption was the largest atmospheric volcanic explosion since Krakatau in 1883. Rarely observed geophysical phenomena, including low frequency atmospheric Lamb waves, volcanic tsunamis, abundant volcanic lightning, high-altitude ash plumes, and teleseismic volcanic earthquakes, were captured by both ground-based and space-based instrumentation. Subsequent ship-based field work on site should provide further insights into the eruption style and distribution of volcanic deposits. In spite of the extensive modern dataset, many questions remain regarding the exact nature of the volcanic source and the propagation of the explosion energy into the atmosphere, ocean, and solid Earth.

We invite you to submit a paper to this article collection. If interested, register at this link:
The abstract submission deadline is March 24, 2023 with the manuscript submission deadline following four months later, on July 24.

Please contact all or any of us if you have questions.

Best regards,
Matt Haney (mha...@usgs.gov)
