Dear colleagues,

We invite you to submit an abstract to AGU 2026 Session S016: Geophysical Advances with Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing in Natural Systems.

Fiber-optic sensing technologies, particularly Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), are transforming geophysics by enabling dense, long-range, long-duration, and cost-effective sensing across diverse environments. This session showcases recent developments in geophysical applications of DAS and related technologies across natural systems and beyond.

We welcome contributions related to:

  • Seismic source characterization
  • Earth structure imaging
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Natural hazard mitigation

We are also interested in:

  • Scalable, real-time workflows and end-to-end handling of large-volume data, and alternative fiber-optic sensing technologies.

Invited speakers:
Jonathan Ajo-Franklin, Rice University
Andrew Barbour, U.S. Geological Survey

Submit your abstracthttps://agu.confex.com/agu/agu26/prelim.cgi/Session/282017
Deadline: Wednesday, August 5, 2026 (11:59 p.m. EDT)

We aim to highlight unique observations, innovative methodological developments, and integrative approaches that are redefining the possibilities of fiber-optic sensing. Join us in shaping this fast-growing field. We look forward to your contributions!

Session conveners:
Jiaxuan Li, University of Houston
Ettore Biondi, Stanford University
Jingxiao Liu, Nanyang Technological University
Qiushi Zhai, California Institute of Technology
James Atterholt, University of Arizona
