EarthScope Consortium invites you to apply for our Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) Internship—a unique opportunity to engage in groundbreaking projects across seismology, volcanology, glaciology, marine, and environmental monitoring.
Position Overview:
- Type: Full-time, Remote (with travel for in-person orientation in May and potential visits to the EarthScope Primary Instrumentation Center; travel expenses covered)
- Duration: Approximately 11 weeks (Mid-May to early August; exact dates TBD)
- Compensation: $800 per week stipend
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement data visualization tools for DAS datasets
- Design and apply filters to investigate and mitigate noise
- Contribute to testing strategies for noise reduction
- Assist in preparing technical documents and reports
Required Qualifications:
- Proficiency in Python programming
- Background in wave propagation, photodetectors, and principles of fiber-based sensing
- Familiarity with Distributed Acoustic Sensing, optoelectronics, and seismology
- Comfort working with large datasets generated by DAS
Preferred Experience:
- Handling HDF5/PH5, SEG-Y data processing
- Graduate-level experience in seismology or DAS
- Hands-on experience in digital signal processing and filtering techniques
- Experience in writing macros
Eligibility:
- Open to undergraduate, graduate students, and recent graduates (within one year of graduation at the time of application)
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. International students are eligible if they are living within the U.S. and authorized to work in the U.S.
