We would like to invite the broader distributed fiber-optic sensing community to contribute to Session S001 at the AGU26 Fall Meeting, which will be held in San Francisco, California, 7–11 December 2026.

Advances and Applications of Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing for Explosion, Exploration, and Induced Seismicity Monitoring

Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing (DFOS) is rapidly transforming the way we observe the Earth and engineered systems by enabling dense, long-range, and cost-effective measurements over unprecedented spatial scales. This session will highlight the latest advances in Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS), and emerging DFOS technologies for applications spanning security, resource exploration, and environmental monitoring.

We welcome contributions related to:

  • Earthquake, explosion, and induced seismicity monitoring

  • Hydrocarbon, geothermal, carbon sequestration, and critical mineral applications

  • Infrastructure and anthropogenic activity monitoring

  • Subsurface characterization and time-lapse imaging

  • Signal detection, phase identification, event location, and magnitude estimation

  • Machine learning and advanced signal processing

  • Large-scale data processing and validation with external datasets

  • Real-time and operational monitoring workflows

  • Emerging DFOS technologies and field deployments

This year, we are delighted to welcome two outstanding invited speakers:

• Haipeng Li (Stanford University)
Recent advances in DAS signal processing, machine learning, ambient-noise methods, full-waveform inversion, and large-scale monitoring applications, including CO₂ sequestration, groundwater monitoring, and urban sensing.

• Sara Klaasen (ETH Zürich / Australian National University)
Novel applications of DAS for submarine and onshore seismic monitoring, event detection and imaging, with a particular emphasis on monitoring challenging natural environments such as subglacial volcanic systems and integrating DAS into next-generation seismic monitoring networks.

These invited presentations will showcase exciting new directions in fiber-optic sensing, ranging from cutting-edge imaging and machine learning techniques to operational monitoring systems in complex natural and engineered environments.

Whether your research is theoretical, methodological, or application-driven, we encourage you to submit an abstract and join what we hope will be an exciting forum for discussing the rapidly expanding capabilities of distributed fiber-optic sensing.
