In Memoriam: Mr. Aparajita Sengupta With a heavy heart, we announce the passing away of Aparajita Sengupta, longtime community leader, volunteer, founding Trustee and ex-Puja Chair of Durgabari, life member and office bearer of Tagore Society of Houston and a pillar and well-wisher of the Bengali society. He passed away early morning January 22nd in Kolkata, leaving behind his wife, Bita, sons Abhijit and Shomit, daughters-in-law Julia and Annis, grandkids Rohan, Imogen, Esha and August. Apu da/Apu mesho was a genuinely caring man, who has been deeply involved in community activities, caring deeply for every member of the community. He moved to Houston in 1981 and was a large part of organizing Pujas when they were held at the Gandhi Center. Before we built Durgabari, and Houston Puja was only a day and half event, he welcomed members to his home and had Bijoya Dashami at his place. The prep for the Tagore Society picnic was at his place with his wife Bita by his side. From the foundation of Durgabari to his last day, he was an active leader and volunteer, spending hours on the maintenance and upkeep of Durgabari. Any big event including the three NABC’s benefited from his leadership and service. An engineer from Jadavpur University, his gentle demeanor, and his deep care for everyone stood out every day. He treated the community as his family and to many of us, he was the anchor which kept us grounded and feeling assured. He was an excellent Tabla player, who accompanied many famous singers when they visited Houston. In short, Apu da/Apu mesho was the glue who kept the community together, all through his stay in Houston. His cremation and Shraddha will be in Kolkata. His sons are on their way there. Our deepest condolences go out to the Sengupta family. May his/her soul Rest in Peace.
