In Memoriam: Dr Biman Behari Das (1 Feb, 1935 - 5 May, 2022)
With a heavy heart, we announce Dr. Biman Behari Das passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, May 5, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Bhagvanti Das; son, Mr. Barun Das; brothers, Braja B. Das and Bimal Das, and sister Aloo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children. He was born on February 1, 1935, in Dhaka, Bangladesh; that was then part of British India. His family moved to Calcutta in the 1950s where he finished his schooling in Calcutta and went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Calcutta, N.R. Sircar Medical College, in 1959.He went on to do a rotating internship and residency at Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada; and then moved to England for several years. He worked his way up to Senior Registrar in Anesthesia at the Royal Hospital in Wolverhampton, England. He met his wife of fifty-four years, Dr. Bhagvanti Jivan Das, in Birmingham, England, while there for a locum/rotation. He moved to Houston, Texas, towards the end of 1967 to become a Fellow in Cardiovascular Anesthesia at the Baylor College of Medicine. He proposed to his future wife on a trans-Atlantic phone call, and he flew back to Birmingham, England, to marry her in January 1968. He was later admitted as a Fellow in the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons on January 23, 1968. He was board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in October 1969. Afterwards, he practiced cardiovascular anesthesia under Dr. Micheal Debakey at Methodist Hospital and later with Dr. Denton Cooley at the St. Luke’s Texas Heart Institute.He formed his own anesthesia group and worked in private practice eventually retiring as Chief of Anesthesia at Plaza Del Oro Hospital in 1995. He was an avid gardener and fisherman after moving to Houston. He was an active member of the Houston Rose Society and successfully competed in several competitions. He loved to go fishing in Galveston Bay with his good friend Dr. Danny Morrison. He will be cremated at a private service, and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date...
