In Memoriam: Arun Niyogi

 

With a heavy heart, we announce Dr. Arun Niyogi 78, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021 at Kindred Hospital in Houston. He was born in Patna, India to Niranjan and Basanti Niyogi and was the sixth of eight children. Arun received a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Bengal engineering College, a Master's Degree from IIT Kanpur, and immigrated to the United States in 1970, receiving his PhD from University of Iowa in 1973.


Arun was married to Jayanti Niyogi in 1970 and worked as a Civil Engineer in Alabama, New Jersey, Chicago, Jeddah and Houston, and travelled widely before retiring in Houston. He is survived by his loving wife Jayantiand his three sons Sourabh, Surojit and Somrat Niyogi who reside in San Francisco and Austin, and his six grandchildren. 


His dedication to and involvement with Durgabari goes a long way. He has been a Founding Member of the Houston Durgabari Society. In those early days of Durgabari, he understood the need for effective communication among the community members and the use of technology of the time. He was the Chairperson of the first Public Relations Team and instrumental in developing the first Durgabari Website and started sending the weekly E-news containing a summary of weekly Durgabari activities and the upcoming events beginning September 10, 2001. 


He started the My Bangla Gaan website around 2008 which was acclaimed by Bengali fans all around the world. Arun received a heart transplant in 2002. He was a great listener and knew how to reach people compassionately. He was more than a husband, father, and grandfather, he was a teacher to us all. 


In lieu of flowers, any donations should be sent to the American Transplant Foundation. His funeral service is on March 26 at 11.00 am at:
