In Memoriam: Ramlal DasGupta
With a heavy heart, we announce that Ramlal “Ramu Da” DasGupta passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, at 7:30 PM IST in Kolkata, India, after a courageous 6 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A man of remarkable warmth and boundless optimism, Ramu Da was known and loved by people of all ages and walks of life. His career as a Senior Structural Engineer took him across the United States, most notably to Houston, a city he loved so deeply that it remained home in his heart no matter where life took him. Ramu Da built a legacy of genuine human connection. He was a devoted soccer enthusiast, a passionate advocate for the arts — especially the Dugrabari and Natok festivals — and a tireless champion of Bengali culture. His infectious positivity and joy for life touched everyone around him. Even as his memory faded, his spirit remained luminous. Ramu Da is survived by his daughters Roni DasGupta and Jenny Phillips, his son-in-law Joe Phillips, and six beloved grandchildren: Eric, Rachael, Sean, Emma, Merlin (his cherished dog grandson), and Sophie (his beloved cat granddaughter). He leaves behind countless friends and a community forever enriched by his presence. After nineteen years, he finally reunites with his beloved Dipika (Babi), who passed away in 2007. A memorial celebration of his life and legacy will be held in Houston in the coming months, where those who loved him will gather to honor his memory and share the stories that made him unforgettable. May his soul Rest in Peace. Sincerely, HDBS Executive Board ![]() ![]()
