In Memoriam: Mrs. Anubha Gupta

With a heavy heart, we announce the passing away of Mrs Anubha Gupta, known to us as Dima on January 29th , 2026 in Kolkata from complications following surgery for diverticulitis.  She was 84 and never lost her vitality or her love of life. Born in Jamshedpur, India, she fittingly spent the last 3 years of her life in her home in Kolkata. She lived in a big bright purple house which she had painted just to her liking, where neighbors and shopkeepers knew her well as the chatty woman with many visitors and a big family from America. She lived in many cities all over the world but spent close to four decades in Houston where she and her husband Amalendu Gupta built a life together and raised their only child Nipa. Amalendu was a geophysicist and Anubha was a Montessori teacher.  They loved their life in Houston and were hardworking and valued members of the community. After Nipa moved to California, they visited with regularity, often spending months with their daughter, beloved son-in-law Brian, and five grandchildren. She doted on the kids, cooked them luchi and lamb samosa, and scolded them for bad behavior - all in equal measure. But while she was very fond of children, she had a particular affinity for anyone old enough to appreciate her long, meandering stories. She was an intelligent and educated woman with an excellent memory for dates, world history, and her vast family lineage. She loved art, movies, travel, and reading the newspaper for hours. She frustrated people with her strong will and awed them for it just the same. She had a fantastic way of involving herself in everyone’s life, to the point that she became close even with her grandchildren’s friends, nearly sixty years younger than her. She was a timeless woman who will live on forever in our long, meandering stories. We love you, Dima.

May her soul Rest in Peace.

Sincerely,

HDBS Executive Board
