Good morning everyone,

In honor of Lupus Awareness Month this May, Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D., will host a virtual symposium on Wednesday, May 20th, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

For those who may not be familiar, Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, and the brain.

The Facts:

  • Approximately 1.5 million Americans are currently living with Lupus.
  • Females are nine times more likely to develop Lupus than males.
  • The disease is two to three times more prevalent in women of color, including African American, Hispanic/Latina, Asian, and Native American populations.

To address these challenges, we have assembled an outstanding expert panel featuring specialists from UC San Diego Health and Stanford University. They will be sharing the latest insights on science, policy, and advocacy.

If you or someone you know is living with Lupus, is a caretaker, or simply wants to learn more about the resources available, please share the attached flyer and register to attend.

Sincerely,

State Senate SealJesse A. Brown
