Graduate Workshop "Explaining Explaining" 2025
University of Vienna, Austria
September 1-3, 2025

We are pleased to announce the Graduate Workshop on "Explaining
Explaining" to be held in Vienna from September 1-3, 2025. The
workshop is organized under the auspices of, and funded by, the Vienna
Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP).

THEME
Explanations recur as a constant and central theme in philosophy:
philosophers contend that in mathematics, proofs are favoured for
their explanatory values; in the sciences, theories are selected
according to explanatory virtues they exhibit; in metaphysics,
explanatory relations direct our accounts of concepts and ontological
priority; in philosophy more broadly, we offer and compare
explanations for facets of reality in order to resolve conceptual
problems.

CONFIRMED SPEAKERS
Prof. Dr. Francesca Poggiolesi (CNRS, Paris)
Prof. Dr. Chiara Lisciandra (Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf)
Prof. Dr. Benjamin Schnieder (University of Vienna, Vienna)
Fourth speaker to be confirmed

SUBMISSIONS

not limited to logic, metaphysics, philosophy of science and so on.
