Subject: Welcome to the ONLINE Seminar “Argumentation, Proof and Proving in Mathematics Education”, University of Bremen

Dear students, colleagues, fellow researchers and interested participants,

We are very pleased to welcome you to our upcoming ONLINE seminar D5 on “Argumentation, Proof and Proving” in Mathematics Education for the academic year 2025-2026, bi-weekly on Friday, 8.15 - 9.45 am - at the University of Bremen.

Purpose of the Seminar
The seminar explores what it means to “prove” in mathematics education, what the role of proof and proving is for mathematics teaching and learning and what challenges occur in these contexts. While formal proof plays a central role in academic mathematics, school mathematics and applied contexts often approach proof in different and more accessible ways. In this course, we will examine how mathematical proof can be understood not only as a formal product, but also as a human and social process - one of reasoning, argumentation, and shared meaning-making.

Through the reading and discussion of international publications, we will investigate how proof is conceptualized, taught, and learned across educational levels - from primary to tertiary education - and within different cultural and institutional settings.

Structure of the Seminar
The seminar will be held via Zoom every two weeks, and each session will focus on a selected set of readings that form the basis for discussion. Active and extensive reading is expected, as our meetings are designed to be dialogic and collaborative.

All required readings are/will be made available via Nextcloud, where you can access, download, and upload materials for our discussions.

For Master students at the University of Bremen, taking the course for a credited Master’s course, an additional requirement is to design a learning environment that fosters proof and proving in a chosen educational context, grounded in the literature we study. This part will be discussed only with these students, separately.

For all participants together, the seminar will serve as an open forum for reflecting on and discussing issues of proof and argumentation in teaching and education more broadly.
