TITULO: George Boole: legacy of a mathematics revolutionary
PALESTRANTE: Evgeny Khukhro (University of Lincoln, England)

ABSTRACT. George Boole (1815--1849) is a famous mathematician born and
bread in Lincoln, England. He became one of the most influential minds of
the 19th century whose ideas laid the foundations of modern algebra and
mathematical logic, as well as  paved the way to applications in computer
science and technology. This lecture focuses on the mathematical legacy of
George Boole. His most influential works contributed to a revolution in our
approach to logic. Later in the 20th century Boolean approach to logic
became a basis of modern computer science including the construction of
logical circuits -- now known as Boolean gates -- in technical
realizations of computers. The development of mathematical logic by means
of algebra pioneered by Boole gave very fruitful feedback to mathematics.
Mathematical logic became one of the pillars of foundations of mathematics
itself. Many famous problems, like the continuum hypothesis, were solved by
the methods of mathematical logic. Various decidability and complexity
theories were developed giving theoretical foundations to computer science.

Conto com a presença de todos,

Abraços,
