Mathematics, Logic and Language in Schopenhauer
December 7-8 2017,
Free University of Hagen, Germany

The conference is motivated by the growing interest in Schopenhauer’s logic, mathematics and language philosophy. Up to a few years ago, it was hardly known that Schopenhauer dealt extensively with mathematical evidence, logic diagrams, and problems of modern semantics. Both the focus on conceptual theories, hermeneutics, and Euler diagrams in Schopenhauer’s books and lectures (The Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason, The World as Will and Idea, Philosophical Lectures), as well as their link with modern research areas such as “proof without words movement”, and diagrammatic reasoning have shown the actuality of Schopenhauer’s ideas in recent years. Particularly his criticism of Euclid’s „mouse-trap proofs“, his question about the justification of deductive reasoning, as well as Schopenhauer’s relation to Wittgenstein’s theory of meaning are controversial in current research.
