Hi everyone,

I hope you had a great new year! I'm going to start putting out a weekly update for the working group via the email thread so that people who want to stay involved can easily do so. 

From January 1st-5th, 2024, the working group had 2 meetings (one full biweekly meeting and one weekly small group meeting). Our current focus is on refining the vision statement, FDOF Presentation proposal, and RDA Blog post. If you want to help, reviewing these draft documents is the best way to get involved. Additional tasks include solidifying operations and communication channels (Mattermost, Google Groups, Google Drive, meeting archives, dPID website, etc.).

Hi all,

Another great week in the dPID working group! The Mattermost has been a hotbed of conversation. If you haven't already joined, here's the link.  

The weekly update is as follows:
  • Meetings
    • Small Group Meeting - Andrei, Erik and Georgos discussed vision statement and initial funding strategies for the WG
  • Documents in Progress (review needed, all help is appreciated)
  • Conferences on our radar (please suggest others we should look into or let us know if you'd like to help)
    • ALA 2024 - Marshall is giving a talk on Link Rot and the Scholarly Record this Sunday
    • FDOF 2024 - Proposal written, official submission happening tonight. 
    • COS YoOS 2024 - Two presentations in the works, one from Elettra and one from The DeSci Foundation. More details to come. 
    • PIDFest 2024 - 
  • Grant Proposals on our radar (please suggest others we should look into or let us know if you'd like to help)
    • NLNet - NGI Zero Core could be an interesting and fast avenue for operational funds. 
    • OpenScienceNL - Infrastructure - Possible but scoping is important. Likely needs to include collaboration with Dutch Universities and include immediate, targeted outcomes (Decentralized CEDAR running on dPID was mentioned as a possibilty)

Sorry for the delay on the weekly update. Lots to talk about from last week

The weekly update is as follows:
  • Main Updates
    • The FDOF 2024 conference proposal (dpid:152) was accepted! If you're in Berlin this march, make sure to come join the conversation. Big Thanks to Andrei, Line, Erik S, and Chris H for their collaboration.
    • The dPID Working Group section of the website is now live
  • No recorded meetings last week
  • Documents in Progress (review needed, all help is appreciated)
    • RDA Blog Post - In final draft, please review
    • NLNet - Final draft, due tomorrow. Please review if you get a chance. 
    • IFAC AMEST2024 - Andrei's draft of a proposal to speak at an automation controls conference in May on dPID. The submission deadline is today.
    • Conferences and Grants Listings - Thanks to Logan for his work identifying potential grants. We'll be prioritizing and beginning to write soon. If you have conferences in your field that could benefit from dPIDs, come join the conversation on Mattermost. We've got reference materials that can drastically shorten your writing process.

    • The NLNet Funding proposal was submitted
    • The Bi-weekly meeting happened on Tuesday, give it a listen when you get a chance. 
      • Fill out the doodle poll for the timing on the next one (otherwise we will settle on every other Tuesday from 11AM-12PM EST)

Lots of progress this week! The weekly update is as follows:
  • Main Updates
    • The biweekly meeting is happening on Tuesday at 11AM EST, 5PM CET. Here's the zoom link, the focus is on continuing the institutional statement of benefits discussions. 
    • Last call on the RDA Blog Post, thoughts and comments appreciated
    • DeSci Labs is co-hosting a hackathon with the creators of IPFS at the end of this month. The tracks are DIDs and Permissions, Compute over Data (Data Visiting), Funding and Incentive Design, Open State Data Networks, FAIR and Semantic Publishing, and AI in Open Science. Two things: 
      • We have an open call for hackathon ideas, does anyone from this group have problems that they want POCs for? No promises, but we can always float ideas out. The invitation hasn't officially opened yet, we already have over 100 developers signed up.
      • Would anyone here be interested in either virtual or in-person attendance? Let me know and we can figure something out. 
    • EuCoMeS Submission was sent out
  • Documents in Progress (review needed, all help is appreciated)
    • Logan has been hard at work on the Grants Listings - The process of prioritizing is starting now, come help out!
    • See the RDA Plenary "Birds of a Feather" Session writeup. I'm still debating on submission, but it's interesting content nonetheless. Does anyone have thoughts? Additionally, are there any plenary sessions we should tie into pre-submission? Always happy to chat with folks. 
    • ICSSI submission is in early draft, ideas and comments appreciated. The title is "Past the Landing Page: Metrics for Enhanced Reproducibility Based on Upgraded Persistent Identifier Technologies"
    • Machine Actionable Journal Proposal for various groups is in the early draft stage, ideation appreciated
  • On the Radar (things we could use your help with)
    • Dissemination of the Initial POC to interested parties
  • And finally, a warm welcome to our newest group members! We're growing fast!

        Thank you for your hard work on all the coding efforts and socializing of the DPIDs.  

         

        I have been away for a while, so please apologies if you already discussed this topic.  My question is related to the FDO presentation at the FDO Implementation meeting at end of March:  Are there slides in progress?  How long are we supposed to present for?     Does FDO organization require the use of their template  for slides? (they did in Leiden).

         

        I”ll be happy to contribute when the slides are further along.

        Hi Line,

        The plan Chris, Andrei, and I came up with was to...
        • Give more details on the top 3 (choosing between these 6) FDO Requirement Specs which showcase the native compliance of the decentralized web / dPID technology
          • G2: FDOs need to generate trust in accurate data survival over long periods of time, assuring researchers, funders, and developers that their significant effort in reusing them will be worthwhile.
          • FDOR-GR1: A PID, standing for a globally unique, persistent and resolvable identifier, is assumed to be the basis for FAIR Digital Objects. Every FDO is assigned one or more PIDs. 
          • FDO-GR11: A collection of FDOs is also an FDO. The content of collection FDOs describes its construction using an agreed formal language which specifies the relationships of the constituent members. An FDO may be a member of several collections.
          • FDO-PIDR4: The PID system which is used for the identification of FDOs must be global, robust, scalable, and demonstrate persistence.
          • FDO-PIDR5: The PID System which is used for the identification of FDOs must support high security capabilities. The owner, or owner-delegated agent, of a PID and its associated attribute-value pairs is the only actor allowed to make changes, to define accessibility to attribute-value pair information, and to request encryption of information.
          • FDO-PIDR6: Management access to the PID system needs to be secured by a public key infrastructure and if necessary the use of standardised certificates must be possible.
        • Talk about what we think an FDO typing system could mean for UI/UX work through the lens of DeSci Nodes. 
        The talk is only 10 minutes long, maybe 3 slides maximum (which we have not yet begun to create). Always open to suggestions, would you change anything around this approach? Also, we'll plan to use a simple slide format in case information needs to be changed later on. Thanks for the tip.

        • FDO Forum - we were asked for the slides by Line, the slides are WIP
        • DataSys ACCSE 2024 Conference Paper passed the review. The revised version is now placed in a Google document. The deadline for the camera-ready version is the 14th of March. Contributions are strongly encouraged!
        • IFAC AMEST 2024 Conference Paper passed the review. The revised version is now placed in a Google document. The deadline for the camera-ready version is the 31st of March. Contributions are strongly encouraged!
        • Statement of Benefits and Roadmap of the project need ideation and edits to ignite the dissemination!
        • Conference Presentation (templates and copypaste sources) - planned for start

          • Royal Academies in Belgium during the European Commission’s Research and Innovation (R&I) Week launches new CoARA Working Group: Ethics and Research Integrity Policy in Responsible Research Assessment for Data and Artificial Intelligence (ERIP). The meeting is planned for 20th of March too. The Zoom link is available on the RD Alliance website. The dedicated Linkedin group is also available.
          • Conference Proposals and Grant Proposals are intended to be grouped in the same way on Google Drive.
          • IPFS Mainnet conference notes form Denver are available on Luma.

Awaiting now for conversation requests from journalists and photographers.
            • RD Alliance website was updated on 27th of March, and the Blogs section is now disappeared. Andrey contacts the administration group of the website to determine whether we should select another blog platform.
            • Deployment automation work held by Andrey turned into the practical stage. The IPFS Kubo Debian package development started. The dedicated IPFS Forum post will be published soon.
            • Mechanism Design channel created in Mattermost by Erik and Castedo. Please feel free to join very interesting discussion about cryptocurrencies and dPID!
            • We are invited to the Panel Discussion on the ACCSE 2024 conference. Andrey prepared Panelist Position Description slide. Please feel free to suggest your editions, opinions and discussion proposals on Google Drive or in the dedicated Mattermost thread!
            • Erik likely will have very limited availability next week.
            • The Elettra's experimental IPFS gateway ipfs.elettra.eu was permanently stopped by request from the security authorities.

                  • The DataSys 2024 / ACCSE 2024 Conference passed successfully! We had a lot of interesting discussions about the future of PIDs. Andrey will report on his participation during the meeting. The main points raised by the participants and panellists are the following:
                    - The biggest stakeholders in the publications market have a lot of doubts about decentralisation at all as the financial authorities are interested in the prevalence of the singular control authorities.
                    - There is an unsolvable conflict between the federated model of PID system with proprietary minting models and decentralised systems with open minting models in terms of trust and regulation.
                    - The current model of reviewing and disseminating scientific publications based on proprietary PIDs is not feasible for the upcoming era of FAIR and open science because of vulnerability to science-metric weight inflation. The decentralised model of the PID system should provide a way to build a web of trust between the scientific institutions willing to disclose their participation, and there is a need to improve the existing ways of social attestations.
                    - Consolidated opinion of the panellists: Dissemination and social recognition of the new PID system should be based on the participation of at least one of the world's strongest (state-supported?) stakeholders or research infrastructure providers.
                    - Another unsolvable conflict in the PID area is the scalability-vs-minting-needs problem, especially for the popular datasets dedicated to fine-tuning neural models (versioned Big Data datasets with high growth gradients).
                    - Consolidated opinion: Society should choose a way to avoid prohibition of the technologies instead of prohibiting the special, malicious ways of usage (especially about the decentralised technologies). The opinion was agreed during the discussion about the place of the decentralised technologies in the social world, and the unexpected widespread of the sensitive data of any kind.
                  • RD Alliance website - It seems the Blog partition was removed and it is almost impossible to communicate with admins, so we need to discuss the different blog platforms.

                          This Friday I had a meeting with Philipp Koellinger the DeSci Labs leading scientist. He confirmed that Erik, unfortunately, decided to leave, and the working model of dPID needs to be redefined, according to our previous meeting too. Philipp also said that he may propose the discussion about the development direction for the future, and possibilities of participation for our DPID working group in the audio of CODEX.

                          I would also like to invite Philipp to explain his opinion and suggestions in person for the next biweekly meeting. Unfortunately, he is likely not available during our usual working hours, 17 to 18 CEST, so we have agreed that he will write his hours of availability soon, and then we will reschedule the next meeting planned for the 2nd of July, by starting a Doodle poll.

                          I hope that we will find new opportunities from this meeting. Please feel free to write here your availability to pretune the upcoming poll. Looking forward to see you in the meeting on the 2nd!

                          Dear all,

                           

                          Andrei is right – we at DeSci Labs are sad that Erik and our team had to part ways. Erik was our employee number one and an incredibly important part of our company. In the past year, Erik deeply explored the FAIR data and data management angle, which fits perfectly with the open scholarly infrastructure we are building. Unfortunately, we discovered during this process that this angle is unlikely to yield substantial adoption of our technology and rapid growth for the company – partly because decision-making in universities and academic institutions takes a very long time. Erik’s expertise and enthusiasm are exemplary. Unfortunately, we did not find another area in our company where Erik’s expertise could have shined as brightly as in the FAIR data and data management area. This meant that his development potential at DeSci Labs was limited. Therefore, we mutually decided to part ways. We are incredibly grateful for everything Erik has done for us and we are sure that amazing new opportunities await him.

                           

                          We remain fully committed to further develop our DPID technologies under the umbrella of the CODEX protocol, which is the foundation for all our efforts to improve the scientific publication landscape. I’m looking forward to join your future conversations, to learn from you, and to share and discuss our ideas and plans with you all.

                           

                          On my side, I could join your working group meetings on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 2.30pm and 4.30pm, or Thursdays between 2-4pm (CET).

                          Hi what was the rationale behind labeling DeSci Nodes as a “centralized solution”?

                          Given that all the work is uploaded to a permisissionless and unmoderated open content network, and the PID creation is performed using a smart contract where no superuser/admin privilege exists, I’m concerned that perhaps this categorization is incorrect. In the event of a change of control of the company or receiving a government order to remove content from the network, of course DeSci Labs would be compelled to remove content from its own network, however removing it from the IPFS network or the target blockchain would not be possible since there are other copies stored on servers not owned by us. To me this is sufficient decentralization. What was the criteria used by the working group to come to this conclusion?

                          Hello Sina, 

                          Thank you for your email. The concern regarding labeling DeSci Nodes as a “centralized solution” is not about the technology itself but more about the governance aspects. 

                          Specifically, our concerns stem from the fact that despite regularly meeting with Erik every 15 days, we were only made aware of the launch of the Publishing tool through social media. This raises questions about how decisions are made and communicated, suggesting that the solution may not fully consider the involvement and input of the community.

                          We believe that true decentralization also involves governance processes that are transparent, inclusive, and consider the voices of all stakeholders.

                          Thanks Sergio,

                          Our goal with engaging with the dPID WG has been to collaborate in order to create transparent governance processes for the open source implementation of dPIDs. The open source Nodes project is one of many potential applications that can be deployed upon the underlying dPID protocol. We have always thought of the dPID protocol as having separate concerns versus any application developed on top of it, with the intent that the dPID protocol is fully community driven, with DeSci Labs offering engineering support and resources as required.

                          With the recent rebrand from DeSci Nodes to DeSci Publish, the intent was to introduce friendlier language to brand the tool. This is purely an application layer change and not a protocol layer change. With this change we wanted users to have less steps involved when uploading research and also wanted to avoid confusion with unnecessarily technical sounding language.

                          As more applications and integrations come online we of course want all relevant stakeholder to have a voice in steering the development of the underlying protocol. 

                          For example, I think Andrei’s research into alternatives to Ceramic and IPFS are interesting and if there are better solutions than what’s currently been implemented, they should be considered. For something like this we can offer engineering support and can prototype solutions and report back findings.

                          I am committed to developing decentralized governance for dPID. I’m curious about your thoughts on how application updates versus protocol updates should be handled. Sergio, what can we do differently to ensure all stakeholders are included and have a voice moving forward?

I guess, we should think about it as a multiverse project and borrow as many best practices as we can from W3C DID, UNIRESOLVER, and DOI.

                          Yesterday we had a very inspiring and intense discussion with Philipp Koellinger. Please find the video here: 

                          We have discussed many aspects of decentralised PID from conceptual, philosophical and technical points of view, referring to our new Concept document and CODEX library repository. After the discussion, we highlighted the following questions and concerns that, as we all agreed, any team working on the concept of the decentralised PID may directly address:
                          1. Should the minting and provenance of the PID-associated data be based on the transaction-based model, as the blockchain-based technologies suggest? Is there a way to provide persistence, versioning and provenance without spending resources on blockchain maintenance? The other concern is the reliance on the third-party blockchain, like ETH we have right now.
                          2. Do we need to store all the operations and intention descriptions? Would creating a network of nodes exchanging non-anonymous open messages with a limited lifetime, but strictly standardised (and identified with highest-level PIDs) format and structure be more useful? This approach is highly inspired by ROS and SWIFT systems, where a message is always trusted due to its format identified with PID, and it is a subject for cross-control by every node the message passes. The idea here is to preserve persistence and versioning without keeping a log of all actions the involved Agents perform, as the ownership concept is already implemented in the persistent storage infrastructure.
                          3. Is the Agent's identity equal to his private key? Should we use the unified internal representation of an Agent to perform 2FA and persistent login of the single agent over many third-party identity token providers?
                          4. The synonymic model proposed in the CODEX library works like direct aliasing, and Philipp placed an example about dPID aliased by DOI. Could there side-effectors be implemented to provide the functionality that UNIRESOLVER has? Ideally, here we should think about the decentralised system working over any other, as we may be the last ones having valid lookup tables available.
                          5. The users urge over the sovereignty implemented via prefixes. As the limit, every internal Agent's ID should be a) a PID, and b) the prefix. What do you think the best way is to implement this?
                          6. Is there a way to control and partially localize indexing, to keep it reusable?
                          7. The deployment costs need to be addressed. The technologies we use may be quite computationally expensive, and the users should have a very thorough estimation of costs and efforts. The deployment packages are also extremely useful, so is there a way to provide them?
                          8. Do we have now a central bootstrap point when the CODEX endpoint is deployed? How would we avoid this?
                          9. Do we consider the possibility of having different implementations of the same functionality of the key components of the PID system, like in the LaTeX ecosystem we have?
