Hi everyone,
We have had a few students ask about some more resources & tools for the content covered over the past two weeks.
Regarding Brave Spaces -
author adrienne maree brown has a few good books on this topic. Their book
Holding Change: The Way of Emergent Strategy Facilitation and Mediation offers some advice, content, strategies, and templates for creating a culture of learning and brave spaces. That book, specifically, is an excellent tool for facilitators and mediators. They also have
a website with more resources like a podcasts, articles, and toolkits. Specifically with teaching, I have found
this website to be a good start.
From Rachel - we had a few questions about strategies for addressing implicit bias as it comes up (consciously or subconsciously). Here are a few strategies you might consider to mitigate or acknowledge the situation as it arises:
Self-management and mindfulness: Practice being mindful of your thoughts, feelings, and reactions in various situations. Notice when biases and assumptions arise, and take a moment to pause and reflect on them. By developing greater self-awareness, you can begin to challenge and reframe your biases.
Examine patterns: Pay attention to patterns in your thoughts, behaviors, and interactions. Do you consistently find yourself gravitating towards or interacting more comfortably with certain types of people? Are there recurring themes in your hiring decisions or the composition of your social circles? Reflecting on these patterns can help you identify potential biases and take steps to address them.
Seek feedback from trusted allies: Surround yourself with individuals who are willing to provide honest and constructive feedback. Cultivate a culture of learning and growth where feedback is encouraged and valued. By receiving feedback from others, especially when it pertains to biases that you may not be aware of, you can gain new insights and perspectives that help you challenge and mitigate those biases.
Feel free to respond back with any more questions!
