Hi everyone,

I know lots of folks are busy as we head into Week 4. If you have sent me an email requesting an extension, thank you! I look forward to seeing everyone's projects come in. While I encourage everyone to fully participate and engage with the materials, I understand that this course is a heavy lift! As a reminder, you only need to submit 5 out of the six projects to receive a completion certificate.

This week, we'll explore some more practical skills for becoming a torchbearer within your organization or community. We will use the reflections and takeaways from the Week 3 self-paced modules to guide our discussion this week.

Action Steps for This Week:

  • Attend the live session on February 14th, 7:30pm ET to 9pm ET

  • Week 4 materials: Using the materials, research and identify leaders in the outdoor industry who you see as role models for activism. Please come prepared to the live session with the individual/organization you plan to interview in Week 5(if you have not had success with responses, please email me directly).

  • Submit your reflection project by Sunday, February 18th.

Go to the Week 4 Course Page

Bonus Discussion (Optional):

Reply to the thread - What was something you learned about yourself from last week’s prompts? Feel free to share your project, share a picture, or a story!

See you all in the live session this week.

Cheers,

Rachel

Hello Classmates!
This is Mark Zmudy reporting on the optional bonus discussion.
There were so many things I liked about intersectionality and the different lists of resource lists to contact organizations.
My favorite thing was the YouTube video and the concept of Cultural Humility.
For me, this weaves in respect, kindness, dignity, and many of the group norm ideas we talked about in class the last time we met.
I'm so glad to replace the term Cultural Competence. I had already done this by naming it Cultural Sensitivity in Teaching because the word "sensitivity" resonates with my values. But I very much liked the name and parts of Cultural Humility much better.
I can envision how working Cultural Humility automatically unpacks the notion of being willing to lean into emotionally awkward situations (which I LOVE), and practice navigating with an open heart and mind when learning about others who are different.
Thanks and Cheers!
Mark Zmudy
