10 Seniors Named National Merit Scholars
Ten seniors are among 2,500 National Merit Scholarship winners for 2019. They were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, including 60 from Stevenson’s Class of 2019.
Stevenson’s latest National Merit Scholars are Anubhav Agarwal, Ishaan Deshmukh, Andrew Ding, Chase Duvall, Saaniya Farhan, Emily Luo, Poojan Palwai, Thivya Sivarajah, Angela Zhang and Hannah Zhang. Last year, Stevenson had three National Merit Scholars.
National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors. The committee looked at several factors, including the student’s academic record; the difficulty level of subjects studies and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; a personal essay; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2017 when approximately 1.6 million juniors took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than 1 percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named semifinalists. There were about 16,000 semifinalists.
Senior Earns Full Ride to Wake Forest
Class of 2019 member Sydney Glickson is one of 10 high school seniors in the country to earn the prestigious Stamps Scholarship from Wake Forest University. The four-year scholarship is one of the most selective in the nation. Each winner receives an annual stipend covering the costs of tuition, room, board and personal expenses, plus grant opportunities for summer research, travel and international study. Stamps Scholars are chosen based on their academic record and civic leadership potential.
Ex-Administrator Chosen to Lead Downers Grove School
Former Stevenson dean and mathematics teacher Amy Read has been named principal of Herrick Middle School in Downers Grove Elementary District 58. This will be the fourth principalship for Read, who has served as principal of Butler Junior High School in Oak Brook-based District 53 since 2014.

Girls Soccer
Stevenson hosted IHSA Class 3A Regional: The top-seeded Patriots (19-1-2) defeated No. 16 Grant, 8-0, in the regional semifinal for their 12th consecutive shutout and 17th overall. SHS advances to the regional championship game at 6 p.m. Friday against the winner of today’s semifinal between No. 9 Highland Park and No. 8 Buffalo Grove. Stevenson took control of the semifinal game quickly: Gracie Wingfield scored the first of her four goals 4.8 second into the contest. She scored two more times in the first half as the Patriots built a 6-0 halftime lead. Kalyssa VanZanten scored two goals and added an assist. Gabi Nyc and Madison Kim also scored. Abby Kalou recorded three assists, Kristin Hill had two, and Tess Koleno and Nicole Schmidt each had an assist. Keeper Jenny Staten recorded her 12th consecutive shutout. - NFHS Network Replay
Baseball
Stevenson 2, Lake Forest 1: JT Tumpowsky’s bases-loaded single in the top of the seventh inning broke a 1-1 tie and the visiting Patriots (21-9, 10-4) held on for their second straight one-run decision over the Scouts. Jacob Rosenkranz threw a scoreless seventh to earn the save, striking out the last two batters after Lake Forest put the tying run on second base. Jacob preserved the win for starting pitcher Frank Carris, who allowed two singles and one unearned run in six innings and improved to 8-0 on the year. The Scouts led 1-0 until the fifth inning, when Ryan Miller doubled home Josh Snider with two outs. Benjamin Ries had two of the five hits in Stevenson’s North Suburban Conference finale, which marked its fourth straight win. Boys Tennis
Stevenson 5, Barrington 2: The host Patriots concluded their regular season with a 14-1 record after winning their 13th straight match. Eric Perkowski was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles in a matchup of 2018 state qualifiers, while Daniel Tulchinskiy and Payton Adkisson earned a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 decision at No. 1 doubles. Arjun Sheelvanth and Aswath (Ozzie) Viswanathan, who reached state last spring, rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Thomas Gong and Andy Dong were 6-4, 6-4 winners at No. 3 doubles, and Kevin Fei and Gabriel Visotsky posted a 6-1, 7-5 decision at No. 4 doubles. The contest featured seven 2018 state qualifiers, three from SHS and four from Barrington. Stevenson plays host to a nine-team IHSA sectional Friday at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex.
Free Girls Soccer Regional Final Admission Offer
The first 100 students who attend Friday night’s girls soccer regional championship game in the Stadium will be admitted for free, thanks to the Patriot Parent Association. Students must show their Stevenson ID at the gate.
Baseball Alumnus Playing With Ex-Cub Zambrano
Former SHS baseball standout Scott Firth (Class of 2009) is on the pitching staff of the Chicago Dogs in the Independent League American Association. One of his teammates is former Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano, and his manager is Butch Hobson, who played for and managed the Boston Red Sox. The Dogs open their season Friday against the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Impact Field in Rosemont. Firth pitched at Clemson University, then spent three seasons in the Colorado Rockies’ farm system.
Today on NFHS Network
Today’s varsity and junior varsity boys volleyball games against Lake Forest will be streamed live from the Sports Center on Stevenson’s NFHS Network page. The JV game begins at 5 o’clock, and the varsity starts at 6. The varsity will be attempting to complete an unbeaten North Suburban Conference season.

Pep Assembly Friday in the Sports Center
Don’t miss the pep assembly Friday in the Sports Center! The fun will include balloon splatter painting, human bowling, a spirit tunnel, and a volleyball match between teachers and students. The school will be on the PM Assembly schedule Friday, so eighth period will end at 2:37 p.m. The pep assembly runs from 2:42-3:25.
