Brett Gitler Selected for Prominent Patriot Award
Senior Brett Gitler received the Prominent Patriot Award for second semester during a ceremony before school today. He was honored for his work as president of the Best Buddies club and vice president of Student Council, and for “his work ethic, optimistic energy, and desire to help others.”
Brett’s nomination noted that he arrives early for school every day and often stays for hours after the final bell has rung. One example of his dedication to others occurred on a Tuesday night. After a Student Council meeting had ended and most members had left, Brett noticed two girls working to get supplies and decorate for Homecoming. Instead of leaving, he stayed an extra half hour to help the girls finish their work.
He was among 40 students nominated for actions reflecting good character and citizenship. Lohrmann, Students Offer Tips for “Fittest Loser” Participants
Family and Consumer Sciences teacher Sara Lohrmann and some of her students recently led a cooking class at SHS for competitors in the Daily Herald’s “Fittest Loser Challenge.” Lohrmann also offered tips on making healthy cooking part of everyday life, the best fruits and vegetables to have on hand for making meals, and basic items that all cooks should have in their kitchens.
Using 3D Printers to Change a Life
The Pioneer Press has published an article about students in the Engineering Design and Development class, and their work to develop a prosthetic device for a local third-grader, which was featured in the April 5 Digest.
Two Fundraisers Planned for Thursday
The String Parents Association and boys water polo team are holding fundraisers on Thursday, which is a late-arrival day at Stevenson. The SPA will have a breakfast fundraiser from 6:30-10:30 a.m. at Strawberry Field, 410 N. Milwaukee Ave., in Lincolnshire. Mention Stevenson when ordering, and a portion of the sale will go to the strings program. The boys water polo fundraiser starts in the afternoon, across the street at Culver’s, 405 Milwaukee Ave. The fundraiser runs from 3-10 p.m., and mentioning Stevenson water polo when ordering benefits the team.
Some Sobering Words about Prom Night
Stevenson‘s Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, Dr. Cristina Cortesi, will share regular reflections during the school year in the Daily Digest. For more information on Dr. Cortesi and the substance abuse prevention program, visit her web page.
With Prom coming up this weekend, it is important to remember that the majority of SHS juniors and seniors choose not to use alcohol. Stevenson is proud to host an amazing event for approximately 1,000 of our students. As with all SHS events, we expect that our students will be sober. We encourage you to have the same expectation for your students on Prom night and every night. If you choose to host students after the dance, please remember that both Illinois and Wisconsin have social host laws that include significant fines and possible incarceration for adults who fail to prevent drinking on a property in their name or under their control. For tips on hosting a substance-free event, please consult the resources on our web page. Make this a night to remember!
Correction
Monday’s Digest omitted the name of senior Ishaan Deshmukh from the list of 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars candidates. Also, the U.S. Department of Education list included junior Samuel Roytburd, even though the program is open only to seniors. The school is investigating why he was included.

Softball
Stevenson 20, Lake Forest 1 (4 inn.): Emily Freedman and Maggie Trotter hit inside-the-park home runs and the Patriots (4-3, 2-1) scored all of their runs in the first three innings during the rout at home. Maggie drove in three runs and scored three times, while Emily had two RBI and two runs scored. Mara Lippman went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in, while Elle Ruchim was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Lexi Gitler scored three runs and stole two bases. Miyah Brooks hit a two-run triple, and Maggie O’Brien tripled, scored twice and knocked in two runs. Stevenson 4, Mundelein 3: Catcher Drew Ruchim threw out the potential tying runner attempting to steal third base in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game and preserve the road victory for the Patriots (12-5, 5-2). SHS built a 4-0 lead against Mundelein’s ace pitcher over the first four innings before the Mustangs (10-7, 6-1) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Michael D’Angelo hit an RBI double in the first, and Jake Surane and Ryan McElhinny added RBI singles during a three-run third. Drew went 2-for-3 in the game, as did Chris Farina. Starting pitcher Hayden Brotz allowed two earned runs over five innings to earn the win, and Nick Wang pitched the final two innings for the save. - GameChanger.com, Daily Herald

Patriot Pair Runs at Palatine Distance Event
Senior runners Natalie Sorenson and Kendall Roberts competed in the 3,200-meter run at Palatine High School’s Distance Night event on Saturday. Natalie finished 16th overall with a time of 11:07.74, which is faster than the IHSA state qualifying standard of 11:09. The pair had to qualify for the meet.
Volleyball Alum Transfers to Clemson From NIU
Former Patriot all-state volleyball player Jori Radtke (Class of 2017) has transferred from Northern Illinois to Clemson University for her junior season. Radtke was a first-team Mid-American Conference selection last fall after posting career highs in kills and digs.

Tonight’s varsity girls soccer game against Lake Zurich will be streamed live from the Stadium on Stevenson’s NFHS Network page. The game begins at 7:30.

The next Patriot Parent Association Bake Sale is Wednesday afternoon during seventh and eighth periods in the Wood Commons and Glass Commons. Doughnuts, muffins, cake, pies, Puppy Chow and more will be available for $1. Proceeds benefit all students and staff through PPA.
