Final Exams for Seniors Start Tuesday
Final exams for seniors begin Tuesday and end Thursday. Finals for all other grades start Wednesday, and conclude Friday. Senior exams on Tuesday will take place in the Field House. Visit our final exams web page for the entire schedule.
State Water Polo Champions to be Honored Tuesday
The girls water polo team won its third consecutive Illinois High School Association state championship on Saturday, defeating Naperville North, 11-5. The team will be honored, along with state badminton doubles champions Jenny Yang and Emily Hu, during a recognition ceremony before school on Tuesday in Room 2104. The water polo team will be honored at 7:45 a.m., followed by the doubles champions at 8 o’clock. Details on the water polo victory are in the Patriot Sports section.
Milwaukee Avenue Lane Closures Coming Soon
Traffic on Milwaukee Avenue near Corporate Woods Parkway in Vernon Hills will be reduced to one lane in both directions beginning as early as today, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The lane closures are due to a culvert replacement and other drainage improvements at the intersection. Delays are expected near the work zone. The work is expected to last until the end of September. Drivers who use Milwaukee Avenue as part of their drive to or from Stevenson may want to consider alternate routes, such as Fairway Drive, instead.
Corrections
Friday’s report on perfect ACT and SAT scorers misspelled the name of junior Matthew Li. Also, due to an error by the ACT, junior Fanny Borukhova was omitted from the list of perfect ACT scorers during the 2018-19 school year.

Girls Water Polo
Stevenson at IHSA State Finals: The Patriots won their third consecutive state championship and fourth in the last five years, defeating Naperville North, 11-5, in the title game after beating Mother McAuley, 13-7, in the semifinals. SHS finished the year with a 36-0 record, and extended its winning streak to 69 games. Coach Jeff Wimer’s team outscored its opponents, 535-141. This was the second perfect season in school history, matching the 36-0 mark put up by the 2015 state champions. In the championship game, the Patriots removed any doubts about the outcome by halftime, taking a 7-2 lead. Naperville closed the gap to 8-5 after three quarters, but SHS shutout the Huskies, 3-0, in the final frame. Senior Lauren Maloney scored seven goals in the title tilt, and classmate Kalista Tapas added two. Fellow senior Anne Baldino and junior Shreya Sreedhar also scored. Senior goalie Anna Mossakowski made nine saves. Kalista led the way in the semifinals, scoring seven times against the third-seeded Mighty Macs. Lauren had four goals, and Shreya and senior Eleanor Michaud also scored. The semifinal also had little mystery, as SHS led 5-1 after one quarter and 9-2 at halftime. Anna made eight saves. Stevenson has now won four state championships in program history, second only to Fenwick, which has nine. The Patriots are the second team to win three straight state championships, matching the Friars. Girls Track and Field
Stevenson at IHSA Class 3A State Meet: Senior Natalie Sorenson placed 11th in the 3,200-meter run and sophomore Camille Clay finished 12th in shot put and discus at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Natalie, making her first state appearance, posted a time of 11:00.48, about one second shy of earning a medal. Camille, who was ninth in the shot put last year, had a top effort of 40 feet, 6.25 inches, then followed with a toss of 122 feet, 6 inches in the discus. In Friday’s preliminaries, the 400-meter relay team of senior Raeden Mays, junior Hailey Peterson, and sophomores Jade Cadichon and Jordan Tollison finished sixth in its heat with a time of 49.77 seconds, but did not reach the finals. - Official Results

Stevenson hosted IHSA Class 2A Sectional: The Patriots won their 13th consecutive sectional championship, finishing 1-2 in singles and doubles at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex, and will send six players to this week’s state tournament. Sophomore Eric Perkowski defeated senior Zach Kim for the singles title, 6-1, 6-0, for his second straight sectional crown and state berth. He was half of Stevenson’s sectional doubles champion and state runner-up last year. Zach, meanwhile, will be making his fourth state appearance, and finished fourth in state last spring. Seniors Arjun Sheelvanth and Aswath (Ozzie) Viswanathan beat sophomores Payton Adkisson and Daniel Tulchinskiy, 6-2, 6-1, for their first sectional doubles championship. Arjun and Ozzie upset the top-seeded tandem from Lake Forest in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-7 (7), 6-2. The Lake Forest duo had beaten them in three previous encounters this season, including last week’s North Suburban Conference final. Ozzie and Arjun will be making their third straight trip to state, while Daniel and Payton qualified for the first time. Stevenson outscored Lake Forest, 36-26, for the team title. Boys Lacrosse
Stevenson at IHSA Lake Forest Sectional: Freshman Ryan Hynes scored his sixth goal of the game with 10 seconds remaining as the Patriots edged Palatine, 13-12, in the sectional play-in game in the Stadium. SHS advances to the sectional semifinals today at 5:30 against the top-seeded hosts. The two teams met May 1, with the Scouts coming away with a 12-4 decision. University of Missouri commit Seth Collins had two goals against Palatine, as did sophomore Owen Hancock. Seniors Cole Okmin and Tommy Yore, and junior Mitchell Benyukhis also scored. Stevenson never trailed in the contest, although it was tied twice, at 1-1 in the first quarter and 12-12 in the fourth. - NFHS Network Replay | @PatsLax
Baseball
Stevenson 3, Lincoln-Way Central 0: Five pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the host Patriots (23-9) closed the regular season with their sixth consecutive victory. Starting pitcher Nick Wang went the first three innings, followed by one-inning stints from Eli Fishbein, Nick Brueckert, Hayden Brotz and Jacob Rosenkranz. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when JT Tumpowsky drove in Ryan Miller with a sacrifice fly. SHS added two more runs in the sixth on RBIs from Ryan McElhinny and Benjamin Ries. Stevenson did not allow a hit in the final four innings, and Hayden struck out the side in the sixth. Nick Brueckert picked up the win and Jacob earned the save. Stevenson plays host to an IHSA regional, and will face the winner of today’s Rolling Meadows-Highland Park game at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. SHS is the No. 2 seed in the St. Viator Sectional. Girls Soccer
Stevenson hosted IHSA Regional: Kristin Hill scored two goals and Alyssa Bende added the third as the Patriots beat Buffalo Grove, 3-0, in the Stadium to capture their second consecutive regional championship and fourth in the last eight seasons. Top-seeded SHS (20-1-2) will face No. 4 Lake Zurich (12-9-1) in the Buffalo Grove Sectional semifinals at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Friday’s victory marked Stevenson’s 18th shutout of the season, and 13th straight whitewash. The Patriots have allowed six goals all year. Kristin, a senior and one of the team’s three captains, scored off an assist from classmate Kalyssa VanZanten in the first half, and the pair repeated the feat in the second half. Alyssa, a sophomore, closed out the scoring with an assist from senior Emma Ramagnano. The win capped an unbeaten home season for SHS, which has not lost a home game since May 7, 2018. - NFHS Network Replay | Daily Herald
Boys Water Polo
Stevenson at IHSA State Quarterfinals: Defending state champion Naperville Central scored with three seconds remaining to edge the Patriots, 6-5, ending Stevenson’s season with a 23-11 record. The Redhawks (34-1) went on to win the state title on Saturday. After Naperville took a 2-0 lead, goals by Drew Wangard and Dima Kobets tied the game. Central took a 3-2 halftime lead, then neither squad scored in the third quarter. Beno Maya tied the game, then the Redhawks scored two unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead. Dima scored, then fed Mark Holzer, whose goal tied the game with 1:13 remaining. Goalkeeper Alex Mitchell made 14 saves against a Redhawk team that entered the state finals averaging 11 goals per game. - Official Boxscore | Daily Herald, Pioneer Press
Girls Lacrosse Opens Sectional Play
The girls lacrosse team, the top seed in the Stevenson Sectional, will take on Highland Park in the semifinals at 5 o’clock today at Warren Township High School in Gurnee. Highland Park reached the semifinals by winning its play-in game against Warren on Friday. The winner of tonight’s game will play No. 4 Vernon Hills or No. 5 Libertyville at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Stadium. Stevenson carries an 11-7 record into today’s contest, and has won 10 of its last 11 games.
Boys Volleyball at Libertyville Regional
The Patriot boys volleyball takes the court at Libertyville tonight at 6:30 for an IHSA regional matchup against the host Wildcats. Stevenson (26-8) is the No. 4 seed in the Machesney Park Harlem Sectional, while Libertyville (6-29) is No. 11. The two teams tussled on April 3, with SHS winning in two sets. The winner of tonight’s match faces No. 5 Lake Zurich or No. 10 Mundelein in the regional semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Graduating Seniors Needed for New SHS Safety Video
Stevenson is filming and producing its own “active aggressor” safety video. Mr. Latka is in need of 50 graduating seniors to serve next week as extras in the production. He is looking for students who are coachable, dependable and eager to keep students safe on campus. Students will be paid and fed. This is a professional video production. Here is the Northwestern University video produced last summer by the same production company that will be making Stevenson’s video. Extras are needed on the following days. Please go to Room 2400 to sign up.
Wednesday, May 29, 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.: 40 students are needed. This will be a long day, but it is a very important day in which the Class of 2019 will be teaching future classes how to get safe at SHS. The pay is $40 plus food.
Thursday, May 30, 1-4 p.m.: 10 students are needed. The pay is $20 plus food.
The video is intended for internal use. However, it may be shared with other schools as a learning tool. All student extras will need to turn in a release form. Students who are 18 years old may sign for themselves. Students who are 17 will need parent permission. This is the release form SHS will need in order for students to participate.
Do You Have Any Unpaid Fines?
Graduating seniors who have unpaid fines (or are unsure if they have unpaid fines) can stop by the School Business Office (Room 2426) in the West Building. A list of unpaid fines (by student ID number) will be posted at Friday morning’s mandatory graduation rehearsal as well. Unpaid fine information for all other students will not be available until next week.
