SHS Earns Top Honor at State Science Fair
Stevenson was named the top high school in the poster session at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair last weekend at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The honor was based on having the highest percentage of participants earn gold awards in the session. Click here for all state science fair results.
All 31 SHS students whose posters qualified for the state fair earned gold awards, and nine had papers that received the honor. Students who were gold award winners in both categories included freshmen Rohita Kotyada and Prachi Gyanmote, juniors Patrick Tong and Megan Wei, and senior Alisa Wang. The other gold-winning papers came from seniors Anubhav Agarwal and Seoyeon Won, and juniors Kaitlyn Lu and Rayann Yao. Kaitlyn and Rayann earned the Jay and Jeremy Hoffman Memorial Award and $100 for their paper, and Prachi received a Top 10 honor and $50 for her paper.
Other gold-winning posters were created by seniors Riya Gyanmote, Varun Malladi and Aishu Sanchula; juniors Shreya Kurup, Anto Michael, Jasmine Wang, Caimin Xi and Celeste Xu; sophomores David Bayer, Arthur Bereznyakov, Aashish Chaubal, Vednignesh Gorjala, Ashira Johara, Sayalee Patankar, Nikhith Rao, Esha Raut and Arun Sivarajah; and freshmen Srusti Donapati, Surabhi Gangadkar, Trisha Gannu, Janhavi Joshi, Delisha Nair, Diya Shah, Avisha Thota and Shansa Viswanathan.
In the poster competition, eight students won special awards. Aishu and Sayalee tied for the Best-in-Category honor in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Other Best-in-Category winners were Megan (Consumer Science), Riya (Material Science) and Varun (Mathematics). Sayalee and Caimin each received an Apple Dental Award for Excellence, Shansa earned the Overall Excellence Award from the SIU College of Science, and Alisa received the Ethel M. and Lyell J. Thomas Scholarship.
History Fair Projects Chosen for National Contest
Three projects created by History Fair Club students have been chosen to advance to next month’s National History Day in Maryland. The projects earned their ticket at Thursday’s Illinois History Fair competition.
In the exhibit category, juniors Matthew Li, Govind Prabhakar, Erin Yuan and Bridget Zhu were selected for their work, “Reversing the Flow of History: Triumph and Tragedy of the Chicago River.” Joining them will be two students whose websites were selected: “The Tylenol Murders: A Triumph in Drug Safety,” by sophomore Rishika Chikoti, and “Chicago Pile-1: A Scientific Triumph Transforms into Tragedy,” by sophomore Krishna Patel. The History Fair Club sponsors are Pat Ambrose and Dan Larsen.

Monday’s Varsity Results
Boys Tennis
Stevenson 7, Lake Forest 0: The Patriots (12-1, 6-0) won their 11th consecutive match and finished off a perfect North Suburban Conference regular-season slate at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. Eric Perkowski (6-3, 6-1), Zach Kim (6-4, 6-3) and Nicholas Stec (6-2, 6-1) were the winners at Nos. 1-3 singles, respectively. In doubles, Payton Adkisson and Ozzie Viswanathan posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1, followed by Daniel Tulchinskiy and Arjun Sheelvanth at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2), Thomas Gong and Andy Dong at No. 3 (6-2, 4-6, 14-12), and Kevin Fei and Gabriel Visotsky at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0). Stevenson, which has posted its highest dual-meet victory total since winning 12 matches in 2002, will play in the conference tournament Friday and Saturday.
Girls Soccer
Stevenson 2, Lake Forest 0: The third-ranked Patriots (17-1-2, 7-0) matched the school record for wins in a season, captured their 12th straight game, and completed a perfect conference schedule in which they didn’t give up a goal. SHS matched the victory total set in 2007, when the Patriots won 14 games in the regular season and three more in the postseason to finish 17-2. Goalkeeper Jenny Staten earned her 15th shutout of the season as Stevenson held its 10th consecutive opponent scoreless. Abby Kalou scored the game’s first goal in the 24th minute of the opening half, then set up Kalyssa VanZanten for the second score 54 minutes later. The victory against the Scouts (8-6-2, 3-2-1) came on Senior Night in the Stadium. Softball
Stevenson 5, Mundelein 4 (9 inn.): Elle Ruchim’s walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Patriots (8-11) past the Mustangs at home. The dramatic finish was made by possible by a three-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the sixth that tied the game at 4-4. Anna Fossier doubled home Maggie O’Brien, then Emily Freedman followed with a double that scored Anna and Allison Wade. In the first inning, Haley Barnes doubled and scored one batter later when Maggie Trotter’s infield grounder was misplayed by the Mustangs. Boys Volleyball
Stevenson d. Fremd, 25-18, 25-23: Thomas Finn and Justin Ross recorded six kills apiece for the host Patriots (24-6), who have won five in a row and 10 of their last 11. Gavin Meng added five kills for SHS in the Sports Center. Andrew Keevins had 12 assists on 36-of-37 setting, while Will Sorenson was 11-for-11 with five assists. Justin, Will and Daniel Prindiville each had two block assists. Gavin, Thomas and Samuel Epstein each had six digs and Will added five. Warren 10, Stevenson 2: The Patriots had their four-game winning streak snapped in Gurnee by the league-leading Blue Devils (23-2, 10-0). Jake Surane and Michael D’Angelo each went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for SHS (17-7, 8-3). Jacob Freed pitched the final three innings, giving up one run and three hits while striking out four. - GameChanger.com, Daily Herald

Boys Tennis
Stevenson at Deerfield Invitational: The Patriots won the team championship in a tournament that featured five of last year’s top 10 squads in the state. SHS, which was second in Illinois last spring, had 60 points, ahead of runner-up and 2018 third-place finisher New Trier (48), and defending state champion Hinsdale Central (47). Fourth-seeded Eric Perkowski won the No. 1-2 singles championship. After rolling through his first two matches, Eric rallied to defeat the No. 2 seed from Glenbrook South, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals. He then knocked off GBS’ No. 3 seed, 6-1, 6-3, for the title. Andy Dong and Thomas Gong, also a No. 4 seed, won the No. 3-4 doubles crown. They knocked off the No. 1 seed from Hinsdale Central, 7-5, 6-2, in the semifinals, then rallied to beat Hinsdale’s No. 3 seed in the championship match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Zach Kim was third at No. 1-2 singles, and Ozzie Viswanathan and Arjun Sheelvanth were fourth at No. 1-2 doubles.
Baseball Players Organize Suicide Prevention Event
Five members of the baseball program organized a fundraiser that raised more than $1,000 Sunday for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Zach Fell, Aiden Asllani, Sean Kiah, Jake Surane and Chris Switzer worked with the Culver’s restaurant in Lincolnshire to host the event. The boys were helped by about 20 volunteers, many from the SHS baseball program. Zach talked with Pioneer Press about the fundraiser, and the man for whom it was dedicated.
Water Polo Teams Begin State Tournament Push
The varsity girls water polo team begins its push for a third consecutive state championship on Wednesday. The undefeated Patriots, the No. 1 seed in the Buffalo Grove Sectional, will take on the winner of Monday night’s Highland Park/Warren game at 5 p.m. in the sectional quarterfinals. The semifinals are Friday and the sectional championship game is Saturday morning. The boys water polo team also is the top seed in the Buffalo Grove Sectional, and opens play at 5 p.m. Thursday against the winner of today’s Vernon Hills-Highland Park game. The Patriot boys are seeking their eighth straight trip to the state tournament.

Final PPA Bake Sale Wednesday Afternoon
The final Patriot Parent Association Bake Sale of the school year is Wednesday afternoon during seventh and eighth periods in the Wood Commons and Glass Commons. Doughnuts, muffins, cake, pies, Puppy Chow and more will be available for $1. Proceeds benefit all students and staff through PPA.
The girls cross country team will have an informational meeting from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Monday, May 13 in the Recital Hall.
