Junior in the Mix for International Chemistry Olympiad
Junior Allen Ding has qualified for the second consecutive year to attend the International Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp. Allen was one of 20 of the nation’s top high school chemistry students who emerged from a series of national exams that involved more than 16,000 students across the United States. He will participate in a two-week study camp at the University of Maryland from June 2-13. At the conclusion of the camp, the top four students will be named to represent the United States at the 51st International Chemistry Olympiad July 21-30 in Paris.
Four Make USA Physics Olympiad Medal Rankings
Four Stevenson students are in the final medal rankings for the 2019 USA Physics Olympiad Exam, which was given in April. In addition to gold medalist Emily Lu, who earned a place on the 20-member United States Physics Team, junior Josh Tsai earned silver medal status while sophomore Jared Machtinger was a bronze medalist. Junior Dylan Hu received honorable mention.
Senior Reaches Goal, Publishes Book
Senior Jeremy Frank set a goal of publishing his first book before graduating from Stevenson, and he made it. “Hidden Ball Trick: The Baseball Stats You Never Thought to Look For From 1876-1919 (Vol. 1)” made its Amazon debut last week. The book, co-authored by Jim Passon, offers a year-by-look at Major League Baseball’s first half-century, concluding with the end of the Dead Ball Era and the emergence of Babe Ruth. Since starting his MLB Random Stats account on Twitter as a freshman, Jeremy has accumulated 32,000 followers and his information has been highlighted by Fox Sports and ESPN, among others. He will be studying data science at Purdue University.
Teens Report Higher Stress Levels Than Adults
Stevenson‘s Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, Dr. Cristina Cortesi, will share regular reflections during the school year in the Daily Digest. For more information on Dr. Cortesi and the substance abuse prevention program, visit her web page.
In a 2013 survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, teens reported that their stress levels during the school year far exceeded what they believe to be healthy, and topped adults’ average reported stress levels. Even during the summer, teens reported their stress was at levels higher than what they believe is healthy. About 30% of teens also reported feeling overwhelmed, depressed or sad, and tired as a result of stress. In addition, 23% reported skipping a meal due to stress. With AP exams in full swing and final exams around the corner, consider reviewing this additional information on how to help your teen manage stress.

Monday’s Varsity Results
Boys Volleyball
Stevenson d. Grant, 25-13, 27-25: Thomas Finn recorded nine kills and Andrew Keevins served six aces to lead the visiting Patriots (26-6) to their seventh straight victory and 12th in the last 13 contests. Andrew also dished out 15 assists on 35-of-36 setting. Will Sorenson had four assists to go along with a team-high 10 digs and three aces. Justin Ross contributed six kills and four block assists for SHS, which closes its regular season with back-to-back home matches Wednesday against Lake Forest and Palatine, respectively.
Girls Lacrosse
Stevenson 18, Palatine 5: The Patriots (11-7) dominated on Senior Night in the Stadium, spending only five minutes on defense against the Pirates. Goal scorers were seniors Aedyn Gorenberg, Anastasia Loskutov, Georgia Maskalunas, Sophie Sorenson, Erica Spieler, Emily Varshavsky and Skylar Zelinske, plus juniors Jamie Fisher, Nicole Park, Michelle Shen and Kilian Weber. This was the final game of the regular season for SHS, which has won 10 of its last 11 contests. Stevenson is hosting one of eight IHSA sectional tournaments, and is the top seed. However, the Patriots will play their opening game on the road, at 5 p.m. Monday at Warren. Boys Lacrosse
Stevenson 9, Palatine 6: The Patriots scored four times early in the fourth quarter to take control and spoil the host Pirates’ Senior Night. SHS, which never trailed in the its regular season finale, led 5-4 at the end of the third quarter. Stevenson then scored unanswered four goals in less than four minutes to extend its lead. Seth Collins scored twice during the outburst, and Ryan Hynes and Bryce Wujcik also scored. Seth, Ryan, Bryce and Cole Okmin all scored two goals. Owen Hancock also scored for SHS, which will play host to Palatine in the IHSA Lake Forest Sectional at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Stadium. This is the first year for boys lacrosse as an IHSA-sanctioned sport. Stevenson is the No. 8 seed in the sectional, while Palatine is No. 9. - Daily Herald
Boys Tennis
Stevenson 5, Highland Park 2: The visiting Patriots won their 12th consecutive match and matched the most dual-meet victories in a season since 2001. SHS (13-1) claimed four of the five doubles matches, and also received a 6-2, 6-2 win from Nicholas Stec at No. 2 singles. The winning doubles tandems were Aswath (Ozzie) Viswanathan and Arjun Sheelvanth at No. 2 (6-0, 3-6, 6-3), Andy Dong and Thomas Gong at No. 3 (6-3, 6-0), Gabriel Visotsky and Kevin Fei at No. 4 (6-1, 6-4), and Kiran Mohan and Michael Kim at No. 5 (6-2, 4-6, 6-4). The Patriots close their regular season today with a home match against Barrington at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex, then play host to the IHSA Stevenson Sectional on Friday.
Baseball
Stevenson 7, Lake Forest 6: Ryan McElhinny capped a three-RBI day by hitting a sacrifice fly to score Zach Taylor with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the host Patriots (20-9, 9-4). Ryan’s sac fly came one inning after SHS scored three runs to erase a 6-3 deficit. Chris Farina went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Jake Surane and Isaiah Hart each went 2-for-3. Ryan and Benjamin Ries each scored twice. Jacob Rosenkranz shut down the Scouts in the top of the seventh to earn the victory. The two teams square off again today in Lake Forest. - GameChanger.com
Softball
Warren 10, Stevenson 8: The host Patriots had their five-game winning streak snapped on Senior Night. Maggie Trotter hit a two-run home run in the first inning to stake SHS to a 2-0 lead. Riley Housinger, Lexi Gitler and Mara Lippman all went 2-for-4. Haley Barnes knocked in two runs. Emily Freedman and Maggie O’Brien both scored twice. Girls Soccer Regional Semifinal Tonight
The varsity girls soccer team looks to continue its record-setting ways when it faces Grant at 6 o’clock tonight in the IHSA Class 3A Stevenson Regional semifinals in the Stadium. The Patriots are the top seed in the Buffalo Grove Sectional, while the Bulldogs are No. 16. SHS has won a school record 18 games this year, with only one loss and two ties, and has shut out its last 11 opponents. Tonight’s game will be live streamed on Stevenson’s NFHS Network page. The winner of tonight’s contest will play for the regional championship at 6 p.m. Friday against the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between Highland Park and Buffalo Grove.
JV Boys Tennis Team Wins League Tournament
The junior varsity boys tennis team capped a successful season by winning the North Suburban Conference tournament last weekend. Stevenson won five of seven titles. Sophomore Yoav Malka and freshman Sammy Cohan posted 6-0, 6-0 victories in the championship matches at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. In doubles, sophomores James Kim and Ben Luo rallied to win the No. 1 bracket, 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. Sophomore Raj Sachar and junior Anthony Yan earned a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 2, and sophomore Nick Xing and Jun Ha Paik captured the No. 4 flight, 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Daniel Jaworski finished second at No. 1 singles, as did the No. 3 doubles team of sophomores Nikita Loos and Colin Jette. The Patriots finished the year with a 15-1 record, winning all of its NSC matches in addition to tournaments at Barrington and New Trier.
SHS Hosting Water Polo Clinic for Kids, All-Star Games
Stevenson is hosting the Illinois Water Polo All-Star Games and Age-Group Clinic on Sunday, June 2 in the Patriot Aquatic Center. The age-group clinic, open to girls and boys in eighth grade and under (ages 6-14), will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The cost is $25. Click here to register and pay online. The high school girls all-star game starts at 12:30 p.m., followed by the boys all-star game at 1:45. Any kids attending the clinic receive free admission to the all-star games. Watch State Water Polo Games for Free
The first 50 SHS students who show their school ID at the IHSA State Water Polo Finals Thursday and Friday will be admitted for free, thanks to the Sports Boosters. The girls play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, and the boys play at 7 p.m. Friday. All state finals games are played in the Patriot Aquatic Center.
Testing Center Hours, Guidelines During Finals
The Testing Center will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. during finals. Students must sign up for tests during final times. A test can only be taken during a free period, study hall or PE. Before- and after-final times don’t require signing up. If a student is signed up during a rescheduled final, the Testing Center needs a note or an email from the teacher or counselor stating that the final has been rescheduled. Seniors who are exempt from a final may take a test in the Testing Center during that class time, with written notification from their teacher or counselor.
Students Can Update iPads to iOS 12.3
Students can update their SHS iPad to iOS 12.3. However, anyone who has an iOS less than 11.4.1 must stop at the SMARTdesk before updating. Visit the SMARTdesk web page for details.
