Graduation Speakers Announced
Graduating seniors Sanam Jhaveri and Ananya Shah will deliver the two student addresses at the school’s 54th annual commencement on Friday. Sanam will give the Scriptor speech, which is a reflective look at the senior class’ lives from kindergarten through high school. Ananya will follow with the Gubernator speech, a forward-looking address focusing on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the Class of 2019. The pair was chosen through an application process open to any senior, which included providing a written and video version of the proposed speech. Friday’s commencement begins at 5 p.m. Friday at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates.
Catalyst Members Present at BG Village Board Meeting
Several students from the Catalyst club attended the Buffalo Grove Village Board meeting Monday night, urging trustees to approve a resolution opposing the statewide legalization of recreational marijuana. Junior Victor Shi, sophomore Rebekah Jin and 2018 alumna Ananya Pati gave a presentation in support of the resolution, which calls on state lawmakers to slow down the legalization process to allow for further study of the issue. They were joined by other SHS and Aptakisic Junior High School students who are part of Catalyst, a youth group affiliated with the Stand Strong Coalition. The board narrowly approved the resolution, 4-3, with Village President Beverly Sussman casting the deciding vote.
Scholastic Bowl Teams Heading to National Contest
Stevenson’s two Scholastic Bowl teams will compete at the 2019 High School National Championship Tournament this weekend in Atlanta. A total of 336 teams are registered for the event, which is the top prep quiz bowl event in the country.
Trio Honored for Chemistry Aptitude
Three students were honored by the American Chemical Society after they qualified for the organization’s national exam. Leading the way was junior Allen Ding, who was among the top 20 scorers out of 16,000 who took the exam in late April. He qualified for the second straight year to attend next month’s International Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp. The two-week camp determines the four-member United States team that will compete at the 51st International Chemistry Olympiad July 21-30 in Paris. He received High Honors on the national exam, as did junior Richard Yin. Also honored was sophomore Rick Wang, who received Honors designation. Richard and Allen are half of the leadership team of the SHS Chemistry Club, along with seniors Angela Zhang and Josephine Zhang. The club sponsors this year were Christina Higgins and Kevin Crowe.
Students Present Exhibit at Chicago History Museum
The National History Day-bound team of juniors Matthew Li, Govind Prabhakar, Erin Yuan and Bridget Zhu presented their exhibit, Reversing the Flow of History: Triumph and Tragedy of the Chicago River, to the attendees of the Spark Awards Tuesday night at the Chicago History Museum. The Spark Awards is a fundraiser that recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Chicago history, the Chicago Metro History Fair, and education. The National History Day competition is June 9-13 at the University of Maryland.

Girls Soccer
Stevenson at IHSA Class 3A Buffalo Grove Sectional: Keeper Jenny Staten made five saves, including two key stops in the first half, as the top-seeded Patriots edged No. 4 Lake Zurich, 1-0, advancing to the sectional championship. SHS (21-1-2) will face third-seeded Fremd in the title game at 11 a.m. Saturday. This will be the first sectional final appearance for Stevenson since 2007. Tuesday’s lone goal came in the second half off the foot of Emma Ramagnano, who scored off an assist from Kalyssa VanZanten. The Patriots, who posted their 14th consecutive shutout and 19th of the season, have allowed only six goals in 2019. Stevenson also shut out Lake Zurich (12-10-1) by the same score in its regular-season meeting on April 23. Fremd and SHS have not met this season. - Daily Herald
Boys Volleyball
Stevenson at IHSA Libertyville Regional: The Patriots lost to Lake Zurich in the regional semifinals, 25-18, 25-23, ending their season with a 27-9 record. Thomas Finn led fourth-seeded SHS with five kills, while Will Sorenson, Gavin Meng and Andrew Keevins all had three. Will led the team with 10 digs and two aces. Andrew was 38-of-38 setting with 13 assists. Samuel Epstein added eight digs. Stevenson reached the 27-win mark for the second straight season. Lake Zurich (24-13), the No. 5 seed, will face top-seeded Deerfield for the regional championship. - Daily Herald

Senior Party Bus Boarding Information
Seniors going to the Senior Class Party will board buses outside the Field House (parking lot D) at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The cruise runs from 3-5 p.m., with students returning to SHS at approximately 7 p.m.
Volunteers Needed for Great Lakes Games
The Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association is looking for volunteers to help at the 2019 Great Lakes Games, which take place June 13-16 at Lake Forest and Niles West high schools. Athletes will compete in a variety of adaptive sports, including archery, boccia, powerlifting, swimming, and track and field. All volunteers will receiving training on site and no previous experience is needed. Volunteers must be 14 years or older. To see volunteer opportunities available, and to sign up, click here.
