Two Earn Perfect Scores on National Latin Exam
Two students, sophomores Daichi Kobayashi and David Lee, earned perfect scores on this year’s National Latin Exam. Of the nearly 130,000 test takers around the world, only 698 earned perfect scores. The exam is a 40-question, multiple-choice test with a 45-minute time limit, and is offered to students on seven levels. David earned his perfect score in Latin I, while David took the Latin II test.
Another major achievement was earned by senior Emily Luo, who earned a Gold Summa Cum Laude award for four consecutive years. This year, she took the Prose IV test. She received an Oxford Classical Dictionary for her accomplishment.
Emily, Daichi and David were among 23 Stevenson students who earned Gold Summa Cum Laude awards, the top level, on this year’s exam. They were joined by:
Latin I: Freshmen Reese Suren, Monika Ladavicius, Natalie Sinjaradze, Lucy Bullock, Nitya Nair, Brady Rivkin, Johnny Burrer, Gabriel Visotsky and Ashley Madeyski.
Latin II: Sophomores Hayden Gantt, Aniket Dixit, Jonathan (Jack) Lee, Wesley Park, William Rademacher and Allen Guo, and junior Adam Dziaba.
Latin III: Juniors Joyce Bai, Ketna Kolakaluri, Cameron Coffey and Sean Li.
Eighteen students earned Silver Maxima Cum Laude honors: Seniors Daniel Zhu, Meghan Oh and Josiah Matthews, and juniors Advait Deoskar and Trisha Patel (Prose IV); juniors Janice Lee and Ayako Taira (Latin III); sophomores Katherine Linsdau, Eric Liu, Prachothan Gyajangi, Daniel Turchin and Jack Fulton (Latin II); and junior Ilona Sergeeva, sophomore Kyle Oh, and freshmen Sankirtana Ravichandran, Kayle Sacksteder, Iyad Hamid and Reba Shenkman.
SHS Has Golden Apple Scholar Again
For the second straight year, Stevenson has a Golden Apple Scholar. Senior Sarah McCool has been chosen for the award, which is a teacher preparation and scholarship program for high school seniors, and first- and second-year Illinois college students, who are willing to work in Illinois schools-of-need. Sarah, who will be attending Illinois State University, follows Weston Acampora (Class of 2018), who attends the University of Illinois. Both of them gained teaching experience through the Teaching Young Children course at Stevenson.
Memorial Service for Will Steber on Saturday
A memorial service for junior Will Steber, who died Nov. 2, will be held from 2-6 p.m. Saturday in the Sycamore Room at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle. Commemoration will take place at 5 p.m. The memorial is open to the public. Click here for the obituary. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to the Will Steber Memorial Fund at the Ronald McDonald House of Michiana.
Beware of Scholarship Scams
Some Stevenson students have received an invitation to join a for-profit scholastic honor society called the National Society of High School Scholars. The invitation states that students were selected for membership based on their achievements at SHS.
Stevenson is not affiliated with the organization, has not released student names to the group, and does not recommend students pay for a chance to receive college scholarships.
Students should weigh several factors before accepting an invitation to an honor society, including the age of the organization and whether the organization is not-for-profit. Evaluating the merits of an honor society is not just for high school students. The Association of College Honor Societies offers this checklist for students to use when judging the credibility of an honor society.
Sophomore to be Part of Legalization Panel Discussion
Sophomore Carson Ezell, a member of Catalyst, will be featured in a town hall panel discussion on the commercialization of marijuana Monday in Lake Forest. The event will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. at the headquarters of LEAD (Linking Efforts Against Drugs), 270 E. Westminster Ave. He will join Dr. Susan Sirota, an SHS parent and pediatrician; Dr. Nick Salamie, a pharmacist who works at the PDI Medical cannabis dispensary in Buffalo Grove; Andy Duran, CEO of LEAD; and Omari Prince, Illinois state director of Smart Approaches to Marijuana.

Stevenson at IHSA Buffalo Grove Sectional: Dima Kobets scored five goals to lead the top-seeded Patriots past eighth-seeded Highland Park, 18-2, in the quarterfinals. Jeffrey Mao and Sammy Maya tallied three goals apiece for SHS, which will face fifth-seeded McHenry in the sectional semifinals at 7 o’clock tonight. The Warriors defeated fourth-seeded Libertyville, 9-8, in three overtimes on Thursday. The sectional championship game takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday. - Illpolo.com

Stevenson at IHSA Class 3A Lake Zurich Sectional: Camille Clay won the shot put and discus, and Natalie Sorenson captured the 3,200-meter run, earning automatic berths in next week’s state meet at Eastern Illinois University. Joining Camille and Natalie at EIU will be the 400-meter relay team of senior Raeden Mays, junior Hailey Peterson, and sophomores Jade Cadichon and Jordan Tollison, who finished second in 49.66 seconds. Camille, a sophomore, had winning throws of 39 feet, 2.5 inches in the shot put, and 124 feet, 6 inches in the discus, and will be making her second straight trip downstate. Her winning discus toss went nearly 8 feet farther than the runner-up from Palatine, while she had a 2-foot advantage in the shot put. Last year, Camille finished ninth in shot put and became the program’s first state medalist since 2014. Natalie, a senior who will continue her running career at Washington University in St. Louis, will be making her first trip to state. Her winning time of 10:59.79 was a personal best, and nearly seven seconds faster than the next closest competitor. The 400 relay members, all first-time qualifiers, are the first SHS relay team to qualify for state since 2000, and the first 400 relay team to make state since 1999. The foursome also finished third in the 800 relay (1:46.89), but did not qualify for state. Also placing third was freshman Ella O’Neal in the shot put (36-2.5). Stevenson at North Suburban Conference Championships: Jahleel Perrin won two individual races and ran in two victorious relays to lead the Patriots to their second consecutive conference title. The junior won the 100-meter (11.26) and 200-meter (22.94) dashes, and ran in the 800 relay (1:33.51) and 400 relay (43.49). SHS outscored Warren, 142-131, for the team title at Zion-Benton. Sophomore David Smolensky was second in the 100 (11.33) and 200 (22.95), ran in both relays, and also placed third in the 400 (52.31). They were joined in the 400 relay by junior Jordan Vincent, who was second in the 400 (51.43), along with classmate Shane Johnson. Sophomore Chris Xie and freshman Jimmy Davis ran in the 800 relay. Shane, David and Jahleel were part of the winning 400 and 800 relays at last year’s NSC meet. Stevenson also captured two field events: Senior Maema Njongmeta won the discus (152 feet, 8 inches) and classmate Anand Batbaatar claimed the shot put (51-11). Senior Dan Erdenetsogt was second in both events (147-8 and 48-7). Also contributing to the Patriots’ point total were junior Anthony Rodriguez, who was third in the 3,200 (9:49.12), and sophomore Asher Mason, who finished sixth in the 300 intermediate hurdles (44.50). Next up for Stevenson is the IHSA Buffalo Grove Sectional on Thursday. - Official Results
Girls Soccer
Stevenson 5, Carmel 0: The host Patriots (18-1-2) ended their regular season in emphatic fashion, posting their 11th consecutive shutout en route to setting a new school record for wins in a season. Stevenson broke the old mark of 17 wins set by the 2007 squad. Goalkeeper Jenny Staten made three saves for her 16th shutout of the season, and SHS scored three goals in the first half to take control. Gabi Nyc scored the first goal off a corner kick from Kalyssa VanZanten, who had two goals on the night. Emma Ramagnano also scored two goals. Gabi had an assist, as did Myah Schoolman, Madison Kim and Nicole Schmidt. The Patriots, who are unbeaten at home since May 7, 2018, will play host to Zion-Benton or Grant in the Class 3A Stevenson Regional at 6 p.m. Tuesday. - NFHS Network Replay

Fremd 5, Stevenson 4: The host Patriots dropped the nonconference contest against the Vikings, falling to 17-9 on the season. After Fremd opened with two runs in the top of the first inning, Chris Farina (2-for-4, two runs) doubled and scored on a groundout by Jake Surane (2-for-4) in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead in half. Zach Taylor tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run double in the third, scoring Chris and Jake. Stevenson’s final run came in the fourth, when Ryan McElhinny walked, stole second and third, and came home on a single from Ryan Miller (2-for-3). JV Boys Track and Field Team Wins League Title
The junior varsity boys track and field team joined the varsity in winning North Suburban Conference championships Thursday night at Zion-Benton. Stevenson edged Lake Zurich, 110-106, for the title. Sophomore Matt Spilotro won the 100 (11.92) and 200 (24.57), and ran in the first-place 400 relay (43.49) with sophomore Ronell James and freshmen Trevor Abbott and Jacob Kurek. The other individual winner was freshman Floyd Glinsey, who took the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 5 inches. Four Pats placed second: Trevor in the 200 (24.97), sophomore Wesley Park in the 1,600 (4:49.20), and freshmen Tyler Roberts in the 3,200 (10:26.36) and Braden Burns in the long jump (16-9). Yearbook Distribution Next Week
Yearbook distribution will take place during all lunch periods Monday and Tuesday outside the Performing Arts Center and in front of the College Career Center. Seniors and juniors may pick up their books on Monday; sophomores and freshmen may pick up their books on Tuesday. After Tuesday, yearbooks can picked up at the school store. Students must have their Stevenson ID to pick up a yearbook. No student may pick up another student’s yearbook unless the student’s parent emails shs_ye...@d125.org with written permission. Students who did not order a yearbook, but would like to purchase one, can do so for $50 at the school store starting Wednesday.
Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove is offering $2,000 scholarships for students who have been accepted into a bachelor degree program.
