143 Qualify for 2020 National Merit Consideration
One hundred and forty-three Stevenson students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last fall have qualified for consideration in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. They were among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants out of approximately 1.6 million students who took the exam.
From the 50,000 high scorers nationwide, about 16,000 will be named National Merit semifinalists in September. Semifinalists will compete for about 7,500 Merit Scholarship awards to be offered next spring.

Two Debaters to Compete at National Competition
Two members of Stevenson’s debate team will travel to the University of Kentucky this weekend for the 48th annual Tournament of Champions, the nation’s top high school competition. The invitation-only tournament features 125 of the top debaters around the country. Senior Sydney Glickson and junior Dylan Hu will compete in the Congressional Debate division. Sydney qualified for the third straight year, while Dylan is making his first appearance. Last year, Sydney finished 11th in the nation after reaching the semifinals with classmate Mary Polupan. Their success marked the first time two Stevenson debaters reached the TOC semifinals.
Spring Dance Concert Tickets On Sale
Tickets are on sale for the Spring Dance Concert, which will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, in the Performing Arts Center. Students in the Mélange and Repertory dance companies and the Concert Dance Class will perform. Also featured will be works by guest choreographers Adam Houston and Chris Xayarath. Tickets are $6, and can be purchased online or at the door.
National Academy of Inventors Honors Alumnus
A Stevenson alumnus with an impressive track record of innovation is among 66 people named recently as the inaugural Senior Members of the National Academy of Inventors. Paul Swanson (Class of 1979) holds 61 U.S. patents, and has another 43 pending. Since July 2010, he has worked for the U.S. Navy’s research and development wing in San Diego. In his first month on the job, a Swanson invention ultimately led to 14 patents that generated a seven-figure royalty for the Navy. He has 29 patents related to molecular biology, helped start one San Diego technology firm, and was closely involved with three others. Swanson holds a doctorate in philosophy and a degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Illinois.
Seniors Honored by Illinois Principals Association Chapter
Seniors Sanam (Sunny) Jhaveri and Madison Taborek were recognized at the Illinois Principals Association-Lake Region Student Recognition Breakfast on Wednesday in Gurnee. They were joined by Principal Troy Gobble and Director of Student Activities Ted Goergen. High school students around Lake County were honored for their record of leadership and academic achievements.
Bass Fishing Duo Takes Third at Tournament
The team of Jason Qualich and Michael Crawford finished third out of 34 duos that took part in the Grant High School bass fishing tournament on Tuesday. The pair hauled in 9.54 pounds of fish. Will Votapka and Jakub Klocek placed 11th with 4.14 pounds. The tournament featured most of the schools that will compete in the Illinois High School Association Chain O’Lakes North sectional tournament on Thursday, May 2.
eSports Teams Seeking Postseason Berths
Several SHS spring eSports teams are in the hunt for playoff bids in the upcoming High School eSports League national tournament. The top 16 scoring teams in each division qualify. Stevenson’s CounterStrike GO team stands 11th out of 61 teams, while the Overwatch varsity team is No. 16 among 71 teams. Also in the hunt are the Rainbow 6: Siege team (20th of 49), the varsity and junior varsity League of Legends teams (25th and 27th, respectively, of 64), the Overwatch Empire team (27th of 71), and the Rocket League team (39th of 57). Individually, two students are among the leaders in the 250-player Fortnite competition: Kartikey Singh currently stands in 12th place and Ethan Shack is 26th. The spring eSports season is about halfway over.

Girls Water Polo
Stevenson 11, St. Ignatius 6: The host Patriots (22-0) won their 55th consecutive game behind three goals from Lauren Maloney and two from Eleanor Michaud. Stevenson jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and never trailed. The Lions rallied in the third quarter to close the gap to 8-6, but SHS put the game away with three scores in the final period. Goalies Anna Mossakowski and Maggie Bauwens split time, making five saves each. Kalista Tapas, Abigail Li, Maddie O’Donnell, Val Zlotnikova, Shreya Sreedhar and Anna Gates also scored. Stevenson travels to Michigan this weekend for a tournament at Hudsonville, then closes the regular season next week.
Boys Tennis
Stevenson 6, Hersey 1: At the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex, SHS improved to 9-1 with its ninth straight victory. The No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Tulchinskiy and Payton Adkisson defeated the Huskies’ 2018 state doubles qualifier, 6-0, 6-2. Ozzie Viswanathan and Arjun Sheelvanth, who also reached state last year, won their No. 2 doubles match, 6-0, 6-1. Completing the doubles sweep were the tandems of Andy Dong and Thomas Gong (6-0, 6-0), Kevin Fei and Gabriel Visotsky (6-0, 6-1) and Kiran Mohan and Michael Kim (6-2, 6-0). Eric Perkowski was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles.
Girls Lacrosse
Stevenson 20, Mundelein 6: Nine players scored for the Patriots (8-6), and goalkeeper Anastasia Crews turned away half the shots she faced in the Stadium. Helena Ebeling, Tessie Primack, Aedyn Gorenberg, Maggie Kirby, Viscaria Liu, Anastasia Loskutov, Nicole Park, Michelle Shen, Gabi Siegel and Sophie Sorenson scored for SHS, which has won seven of its last eight games. - NFHS Network Replay
Boys Volleyball
Stevenson d. Mundelein, 25-23, 25-17: Thomas Finn recorded a team-high nine kills as the visiting Patriots (18-5, 4-0) maintained their grip on first place in the North Suburban Conference. Justin Ross had six kills, and Gavin Meng and John Angelos each added five. Will Sorenson dished out 26 assists on 49-of-50 setting. Samuel Epstein made a team-best 10 digs. SHS returns to action at home Wednesday against Waukegan.
Softball
Grant 18, Stevenson 14: University of Wisconsin-Stout commit Maggie O’Brien hit a home run, triple and double for the Patriots (5-10), who had 15 hits in Fox Lake. The Bulldogs (11-9-1) led 7-0 after the first inning, but SHS chipped away at the lead. After Anna Fossier’s two-run single with two outs, the Pats had two runners on base and the tying run on deck before a pop fly ended the game. Riley Housinger had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Elle Ruchim and Haley Barnes also collected three hits. - Daily Herald

Boys Track and Field
Stevenson 142, Waukegan 4: The Patriots won every event on the road to conclude the dual-meet portion of their season with a 10-1 record. Mark Hellwig and Jahleel Perrin each won two events. Mark captured the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) and pole vault (9 feet), while Jahleel claimed the 100 meters (10.84) and 200 meters (23.70). The other individual winners for SHS were Anthony Rodriguez in the 3,200 (9:54), Aadarsh Hegde in the 110 high hurdles (17.74), Cameron Coffey in the 800 (2:14), Jordan Vincent in the 400 (53.11), Braden Burns in the 300 intermediate hurdles (49.25), Wesley Park in the 1,600 (4:49), David Smolensky in the long jump (19-1), Matthew Pflug in the triple jump (36-9.75), Anand Batbaatar in the shot put (47-3) and Maema Njongmeta in the discus (160-25). Stevenson also won the four relays: 3,200 (9:23), 1,600 (3:52), 800 (via forfeit) and 400 (44.36).

Design the Logo for Next Year’s Odyssey
The Odyssey Committee announces a student competition for the 2020 Odyssey logo design. The winner will receive $250 and have his or her logo featured on all promotional materials for Odyssey 2020. Submissions are due by 5 p.m. Friday, May 17. Interested students are encouraged to attend the Logo Design Workshop at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, May 2 in Room 2432. This is an opportunity to learn from Kristin Maskalunas, principal designer and owner of KMGD Design, ask questions about the contest specifications, and get feedback on designs in progress. Stevenson Film Festival Entries Being Accepted
Students are invited to submit their own films for the Stevenson Film Festival, which will be held the night of Friday, May 17. Films must be 20 minutes or shorter, and school-appropriate. The sponsors, Mr. Aronoff and Mr. Fairchild, will ask students to edit any films they see as inappropriate. Reserve yourself a spot for this year‘s film fest by clicking here.
