Two Students Win BPA National Championships
Two members of Stevenson’s Business Professionals of America club won championships Saturday at the 2019 BPA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif.
Junior Joie You won first place in the Advanced Accounting competition, one year after earning second place in Fundamental Accounting. Sophomore Sabrina Kozarovitsky took top honors in Payroll Accounting in her first trip to nationals. Stevenson also had a national runner-up with the Economic Research Team of seniors Miranda Liu, Maitreyee Malpekar and Hannah Zhang. Miranda and Maitreyee earned top 10 individual honors in 2017.
Five other SHS students finished in the top 10 in their event: The Financial Analyst Team of seniors Jacob Bayer, Ariella Ensinger and Kai Mayahara, and junior Sowmya Venkatachalam and sophomore Grace Zhu in Management, Marketing, and Human Resources. Math Team Finishes Second in State
Stevenson continued its string of superb showings at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics state competition Saturday at the University of Illinois. SHS finished second to Naperville North for the fourth consecutive year. The school has not finished lower than third this decade, and hasn’t placed lower than fourth in more than 25 years.
SHS returned to Lincolnshire with a slew of group and individual awards. The freshman Algebra 1 and sophomore Geometry teams won first place, and Stevenson also captured the Junior-Senior Eight-Person competition and the All-Level Relay. Individually, senior Joey Rivkin won first place in the Precalculus competition and sophomore Brandon Lu took top honors in Geometry.
Brandon also was part of the Geometry team roster, along with classmates Gyeongwon (James) Kim, Prathinav (Sai) Merneedi, Ram Potham, Praneet Rathi and James Xie. The Algebra 1 team featured Jonathan Abraham, Spandan Goel, Andrew Liu, Joy Qu, Greycen Ren, Lillian You and Fred Yuan. The Junior-Senior Eight-Person squad had juniors Eric Gan, Dylan Hu, Philena Liu, Richard Liu, Emily Lu and Andrew Zhuang, and seniors Matthew Jalnos and Angela Zhang. The math team coaches this year were Paul Kim, Eric Anderson, Teresa daPonte, Robert Gammelgaard, Brad Habel, Sydney Hendricks, Grant Johnson, Andrew Richardson and Chris Thibaudeau.
Orchestra Awards Concert Tuesday Night
The Orchestra Awards Concert takes place at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Performing Arts Center. Admission is free. For those unable to attend, the concert will be live streamed through this link on the Fine Arts Division’s Vimeo page.
Last Day for Bids in SPA Online Auction
Today is the last day to place bids in the String Parents Association online auction. Special deals at several area businesses are available for bid. Click here to see details and auction items. Winners will be announced at the Orchestra Awards Concert on Tuesday. Winners unable to attend the concert will be notified by email.
Math Carnival for Grades 3-5 Thursday Night
Stevenson is hosting its annual Math Carnival for third-, fourth- and fifth-grade children in District 125 from 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the Forum, inside the West Building entrance off parking lot B. Admission is free. SHS students will have more than 40 carnival-style booths featuring games with a math twist. Participants can win “math bucks” at each booth and cash them in at a prize table.

Girls Water Polo
Stevenson hosted SHS Varsity Classic: The Patriots (30-0) capped a perfect regular season by winning all three games and extending their state-record victory steak to 63 straight contests. Stevenson defeated Neuqua Valley (17-5), Naperville Central (14-4) and Waubonsie Valley (22-6). Shreya Sreedhar led the Pats with 12 goals on the day, and paced the team in scoring in two of the three games. Kalista Tapas and Lauren Maloney scored six times. Maggie Bauwens and Anna Mossakowski split time in goal, with Maggie making 14 saves and Anna stopping 19 shots on goal.
Boys Volleyball
Stevenson at Northside Classic: The Patriots won both of their matches and captured their pool at Glenbrook North, improving to 23-6 on the season. SHS beat Lake Forest (25-9, 25-17) and Lake Zurich (25-17, 19-25, 25-15). Gavin Meng led Stevenson with 12 kills, including eight against Lake Zurich. Thomas Finn and Justin Ross added nine kills apiece. Thomas, Andrew Keevins and Will Sorenson all served four aces. Andrew dished out 30 assists on 67-of-69 serving. Samuel Epstein made 15 digs, Andrew had 11 and Will and Thomas added 10 each.
Baseball
Stevenson 5, New Trier 2: The host Patriots (17-6) won their fourth straight game behind a combined three-hitter from Hayden Brotz, Nick Wang, Jacob Rosenkranz and Nick Brueckert. Hayden started and threw two hitless innings, striking out two. Nick followed and picked up the win with one-and-a-third innings of scoreless relief. SHS led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, then scored four times. Michael D’Angelo hit a two-run single, Ryan McElhinny had an RBI bunt single, and Isaiah Hart drove in Michael with a sacrifice fly. Chris Farina went 3-for-3 and Nick was 2-for-2. - GameChanger.com
Boys Water Polo
Stevenson hosted SHS Varsity Classic: The Patriots beat Andrew (12-2) after falling to Neuqua Valley (9-7) and Naperville Central (8-6). Dima Kobets scored seven goals in the win over Andrew, and had 11 on the day. Filip Mihajlovic led SHS with three goals versus Naperville Central and also had two against Neuqua Valley. Mark Holzer also scored twice against Neuqua, and Drew Wangard had two goals in the Andrew contest.
Friday’s Varsity Results
Baseball
Stevenson 13, Waukegan 1 (5 inn.): Frank Carris, Jacob Rosenkranz and Jacob Freed combined on a two-hitter with no earned runs for the visiting Patriots (16-6, 8-2). Drew Ruchim collected two of Stevenson’s five hits, including a run-scoring single in the third inning that proved to be the winning run. SHS put the game away with nine runs in the fourth that included a two-run double by Sean Kiah (1-for-3) and a two-run single from Justin Tumpowsky (1-for-2). Justin, Drew, Ryan Miller, Jack Jonota and Josh Snider all scored two runs. - GameChanger.com
Boys Volleyball
Stevenson at Northside Classic Invitational: At Glenbrook North, the Patriots (21-6) won two of their three matches on the first day of the tournament. SHS defeated Niles West (15-25, 25-18, 15-11) and Vernon Hills (25-20, 25-17) after falling to Barrington (24-26, 25-12, 15-13). Justin Ross had 17 kills on the night, including a team-high eight kills and five block assists against Barrington. Thomas Finn also had 17 kills, and led Stevenson with eight kills against Niles West, while Justin added six. Thomas also led the Patriot attackers versus Vernon Hills, with five kills. Andrew Keevins had 29 assists in the three matches, while Will Sorenson had 28 assists and 21 digs. Samuel Epstein led SHS with 24 digs.
Softball
Lake Forest 18, Stevenson 16: The Patriots (7-11) scored nine runs in the last two innings and nearly pulled off the comeback at The Ballpark in Rosemont. The Bears (11-9, 5-3) led 7-1 after two innings, but SHS pulled within 8-7 and 12-11. Anna Fossier and Haley Barnes had three hits apiece, and both tripled. Riley Housinger knocked in four runs and had two hits, while Emily Freedman had two hits, including an RBI triple. Girls Soccer Team One Win From Tying Record
The varsity girls soccer team can tie the school record for wins in a season with a victory against Lake Forest at 6:30 p.m. today in the Stadium. Stevenson enters the Senior Night contest with a record of 16-1-2, one shy of the record set in 2007, when the Patriots went 17-2. Coach PepeJon Chavez’s squad also has an opportunity to go undefeated in North Suburban Conference play. SHS is 6-0 heading into tonight’s NSC finale. Stevenson wraps up its regular season at home against Carmel at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Jack White Qualifies for State Gymnastics Meet
Freshman Jack White will compete at this weekend’s Illinois High School Association boys gymnastics state meet at Hoffman Estates High School. He earned at-large berths in floor exercise, vault and high bar. The individual event preliminaries take place at noon Saturday, with the finals at 5:45.
Today on NFHS Network
Today’s varsity and junior varsity boys volleyball matches, and the varsity girls soccer game, will be streamed live on Stevenson’s NFHS Network page. The varsity volleyball match against Fremd starts at 6 o’clock in the Sports Center, preceded by the JV at 5. The Senior Night soccer game against Lake Forest begins at 6:30 in the Stadium.
Corrections
Friday’s Digest contained three errors. The Digest incorrectly reported that Kaitlyn Lu will be making her first trip to the badminton state tournament. This will be her second appearance. She qualified in doubles in 2017. The Digest also wrongly reported the number of shutouts for varsity girls soccer goalkeeper Jenny Staten. The correct number is 14. Also, one of the runners in Stevenson’s first-place 400-meter relay team was misidentified. Shane Johnson ran in the relay, rather than Jimmy Davis.

Visiting Artist Presentation on Friday
The final Visiting Artist of the Year presentation will take place during periods 2-3 on Friday at the Visiting Artist Gallery. Chicago painter Nicole Gordon will be on hand to talk about her work and her career. The presentation is open to all students.
