CPN Announces 2019-20 Program Lineup
Gaining control of technology and social media, developing empathy, and learning to slow down are the main focuses of the 2019-20 Community Parent Network programming schedule. Three events are scheduled, all starting at 7 p.m. at Stevenson High School:
LIKE Movie and Discussion (Wednesday, Sept. 18): LIKE is a documentary exploring the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. The film’s goal is to help people, especially students, take control of their social media use, create balance in their lives, and become more caring toward one another.
An Evening With “Unselfie” Author Michele Borba (Thursday, Oct. 17): Parents are grappling with technology- and digitally-driven challenges that no previous generation has faced. Borba will offer proven strategies to help parents raise successful, happy, compassionate and socially responsible children in a hyper-competitive, plugged-in world.
Mindfulness for Parents (Thursday, Feb. 6): Mindfulness, or being present in the moment, is necessary in parenting. Join Ramaa Krishnan to learn how to slow down, and give space for some “being” instead of always “doing.”
Choir Fundraiser Saturday at Jason’s Deli
The choral program will hold its final “Dining for Dollars” fundraiser of the school year on Saturday at Jason’s Deli, 545 Lakeview Pkwy., in Vernon Hills. The event runs from 5-6:30 p.m. Mention “SHS Choir,” and the Choral Guild will receive a portion of the proceeds.
eSports Teams in National Playoffs This Weekend
Several members of Stevenson’s varsity eSports team will compete this weekend in the High School eSports League’s national Spring Majors Playoffs. Stevenson’s “ePatriots” will play against other Central Division schools in the opening phase of the single-elimination tournament. The Central Division features schools in the Central time zone.
Three teams and two individuals qualified for the playoffs. Junior Ethan Shack will compete in the Fortnite individual tournament. He is currently ranked eighth among more than 200 players in the Central Division. Sophomore Josh Nevin, meanwhile, will play in the Smash Brothers Ultimate individual tournament. He stands in 29th place among 258 players in the division.
The three teams in the playoffs are: the Overwatch squad (third out of 71 teams in the division), the Rainbow 6: Siege unit (third out of 49 teams), and the CS:GO team (sixth out of 60 teams). The Overwatch team is captained by freshman Josh Dzekhtser, and includes sophomore Advik Paharia and freshmen Henry Chamberlain, Logan Hayden, Ethan Renda, Ethan Zeidman and Alex Zalewski. Freshmen Ian Jacobazzi and Ethan Price are the Rainbow 6: Siege team captains. The team roster is filled out by sophomore Nolan Simonds and freshmen Daniel George and Brayden Distel. The CS:GO team includes senior captain Brandon Adduci, plus senior Nick Filerman, juniors Shorya Agarwal, Vincent De Guzman and Dean Thomas, and sophomore Stephan Halai.
This weekend’s action can be seen on Stevenson’s Twitch stream at twitch.tv/aeshsesports. All playoff matches will be streamed at twitch.tv/team/varsitynetwork.
Four other teams finished in the top half of their games, although they did not qualify for this weekend’s finals. The League of Legends team was 18th out of 95 teams. Junior Ethan Shaw was captain, and his roster also included seniors Nathan Pratt and Ed Salgado, juniors Charles Burger and Chris Yang, and freshmen Greycen Ren and Fred Yuan. The Rocket League team, led by senior captain Matthew Walsh, was 19th of 59 teams. He was joined by classmates Nick Pantelis, Shirowid Sharma and Hans VandenHeuvel. Senior captain Connor Salm ushered the Overwatch Empire team to a 25th-place finish among 71 teams. His teammates were seniors Elizabeth Arnold and Gavin Udani, junior Alan Hentrich, and freshmen Eric Chow and Kevin You. The League of Legends junior varsity team, led by junior captains Alex Griswold and Lucas Botten, ended 36th out of 95 teams. The roster included freshmen Jenna Ali, Armanya Maheshwari, Akul Singh, Joseph Song and Eric Zhou.
eSports sponsor Jim Barnabee also reports that Kai Jaeger (Class of 2018), who took first place in the national Hearthstone tournament last summer, earned Stevenson’s first-ever scholarship for playing eSports. Jaeger received a $2,500 scholarship from the University of Illinois.

Tuesday’s Varsity Results
Baseball
Stevenson 5, Carmel 4: The visiting Patriots (22-9) pounded out 15 hits and posted their fifth straight win. SHS broke a 0-0 game by scoring all five of its runs in the top of the third inning. Benjamin Ries (1-for-3) opened the scoring with a two-run single, followed by RBI singles from Ryan McElhinny (2-for-3, two stolen bases) and JT Tumpowsky (2-for-4). JT capped the scoring by stealing home. Jake Surane went 4-for-4 and scored a run, while Ryan Miller was 3-for-4. Starting pitcher Jacob Freed went three innings and earned the win, giving up four hits and two earned runs. He gave way to a trio of relievers who allowed only one run, unearned, and two hits over the final four innings: Eli Fishbein (one inning, one hit, one unearned run), Nick Brueckert (two innings, one hit) and Jacob Rosenkranz (one inning, no hits, save). The Patriots close their regular season at home Saturday with a double-header against Lincoln-Way Central, then will play host to the SHS Regional next week. Stevenson is the No. 2 seed in the St. Viator Sectional, and will take the field Wednesday against the winner of Monday’s Rolling Meadows-Highland Park play-in game. - GameChanger.com
Boys Volleyball
Lake Forest d. Stevenson, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22: Gavin Meng and Thomas Finn had 10 kills apiece for the host Patriots (26-7, 6-1), who had their seven-match winning streak snapped in the North Suburban Conference finale against the Scouts (23-11, 6-1). Setters Andrew Keevins (53-of-55) and Will Sorenson (18-of-18) dished out 20 and six assists, respectively. Andrew added 10 digs and three kills, Will had nine digs, and Samuel Epstein had a team-high 12 digs. Spring Sports Awards Night on Monday
The Spring Sports Awards Night will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the Sports Center.
Water Polo Teams in State Quarterfinals
The top-ranked girls water polo team faces Whitney Young in the IHSA state quarterfinals at 4:30 today in the Patriot Aquatic Center. Stevenson, which has won the last two state titles, enters today’s game with a record of 33-0. The Patriots are riding a 66-game winning streak that extends back to the third game of the 2018 season. Whitney Young is making its second state appearance, and its first since 2002. If SHS wins today, it will compete in the state semifinals against second-ranked Fenwick or third-ranked Mother McAuley at 9 a.m. Saturday. The boys water polo team also reached state, and will face top-ranked Naperville Central, the defending champion, in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday, also in the Patriot Aquatic Center. Stevenson, which is making its eighth straight state appearance, has a 23-10 record and is ranked fourth in Illinois. The winner of Friday night’s game will play in the semifinals at 12:45 p.m. Saturday. The first 50 SHS students to attend either quarterfinal will be admitted for free if they display their school ID. The perk is courtesy of the Stevenson Sports Boosters.
Track Teams Ready for State, Sectional
The girls track and field team competes in the IHSA Class 3A state meet Friday at Eastern Illinois University. Six Patriots are heading to Charleston. Sophomore Camille Clay qualified in shot put and discus. She was ninth in shot put last year. Senior Natalie Sorenson, making her first trip downstate, will take part in the 3,200-meter run. Also making their first state sojourn will be the 400-meter relay team of senior Raeden Mays, junior Hailey Peterson, and sophomores Jade Cadichon and Jordan Tollison. They are the first 400 relay squad to reach state in 20 years. The boys track and field team competes in the Buffalo Grove Sectional today. Stevenson won its second consecutive North Suburban Conference title last week, and has several athletes looking for a return trip to the state meet. Senior Maema Njongmeta (discus) qualified in 2018, as did juniors Jahleel Perrin and Shane Johnson, and freshman David Smolensky, who were part of the 800-meter relay.
Soccer Team Prepares for Regional Final
The girls soccer team will face Buffalo Grove for the regional championship at 6 p.m. Friday in the Stadium. (The first 100 SHS students in attendance will get free admission by showing their school ID, thanks to the Patriot Parent Association.) The Bison, seeded ninth in the B.G. Sectional, defeated eighth-seeded Highland Park, 5-2, on Wednesday. Stevenson, the top seed in the sectional, is on a roll. The Patriots have a 19-1-2 record, and have won their last 14 contests, including 12 straight shutouts. Second-year head coach PepeJon Chavez was interviewed last Saturday on WRLR’s “The Sports Corner” about the team’s success, the push for a state championship, and his coaching style. Today’s varsity and junior varsity boys volleyball games against Palatine will be streamed live from the Sports Center on Stevenson’s NFHS Network page. The JV match starts at 5 o’clock, followed by the varsity Senior Night contest at 6.

Language Career Day Talks During Lunch on Monday
What value does learning a language have in “the real world”? A panel of former SHS students and community members discuss the benefits of lifelong language learning, and how it has helped them in their careers, during the lunch periods Monday in the West Auditorium. All students are invited.
State Badminton Champions to be Honored Tuesday
All students are invited to a state championship recognition ceremony for Jenny Yang and Emily Hu, who won their second straight girls badminton doubles title last weekend The ceremony will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday in Room 2104.
Congressman Offering Leadership Program
Students who will be sophomores or juniors next year are invited to apply for Congressman Brad Schneider’s year-long leadership development program for high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
