Weiran Zhao Second in State Design Contest
Junior Weiran Zhao placed second in the 3D Computer-Aided Design Modeling category at the 42nd annual Illinois Drafting Educators Association State Drafting Competition last week at Illinois State University.
Weiran was one of three Architecture and Engineering Club students who competed at ISU. He was joined by sophomores Carson Ezell and Rohan Durai.
Carson also took part in the 3D CAD competition, in which students had two hours to create 20 different parts using Autodesk Inventor, a 3D modeling software program. Rohan competed in the 3D CAD Assembly division. He had two hours to create parts using Inventor, and assemble them to perform a specific function.
Math Teacher to Receive ISU Alumni Award
Mathematics teacher Tina Nocella will receive the 2019 Mathematics Alumni Education Award from Illinois State University on Thursday. The award recognizes ISU mathematics alumni for their accomplishments and contributions to mathematics education. Nocella is the fourth current or former SHS mathematics staff member to receive the award, joining Dr. John Carter (2012), Dr. Gwen Zimmermann (2014) and Jeremy Babel (2017).
Nocella is a founding member of the Complex Instruction Consortium, a network of math educators dedicated to improving math education. She has led numerous presentations on a number of topics, including race and equity issues, and standards-based grading. At Stevenson, she is a member of the Equity, Race and Diversity Cadre, a group of teachers working to develop heightened awareness to inclusivity through professional development training for peers. She also has served as a mentor and workshop speaker for ISU pre-service mathematics teachers.
“Her work in developing mathematical tasks has been instrumental in our division’s shift towards supporting student engagement and elevating purpose in doing mathematics,” said Director of Mathematics and Computer Science Darshan Jain. “Tina is a promising teacher leader and lives our Patriot vision and has an unwavering focus on success for all students.”
In 2015, Nocella received the Promising New Teacher of Mathematics Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Last fall, she earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Dance Teacher Nominated for National Award
SHS dance instructor Tiffany Van Cleaf is a nominee for the 2019 National Outstanding Dance Educator Award. The award, given by the National Dance Education Organization, honors teachers who inspire and motivate students through a collaborative environment anchored by standards-based assessment. Promotion of dance within the community and incorporating life skills within the classroom are some of the other award criteria. The award winner will be honored at the NDEO annual conference in October.
Spring Dance Concert This Weekend
Students in the Mélange and Repertory dance companies and the Concert Dance Class will perform at this weekend’s Spring Dance Concert. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Performing Arts Center. Works by guest choreographers Adam Houston and Chris Xayarath also will be featured. Tickets are $6, and can be purchased online or at the door.
Spring One-Acts Take Stage Friday, Saturday
The Theatre Department’s annual tradition of a spring production featured one-act plays written, directed and performed by students continues this weekend. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the West Auditorium. This year’s student directors are Abby Sokol, Ananya Shah, Elijah Bennett, Ethan Murphy, Isabel Koleno and Nikolette Olsen. Tickets are $6, and can be purchased at the Patriot Superstore during the lunch periods today, or at the door on Friday and Saturday.
Science REACH Members Present Research Projects
Nine members of the Science REACH club presented their original research projects Friday at Illinois State University’s Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology High School Symposium. Sophie Won earned the Judges Choice award in the Behavior Science category. Other students who presented were Delisha Nair, Rohit Pemassani, Rohan Pemassani, Trisha Gannu, Surabhi Gangadkar, Ashira Johara, Akash Varadhan and Rohita Kotyada. Science REACH members will participate in the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair on Friday and Saturday at Southern Illinois University.

Girls Soccer
Stevenson 9, Waukegan 0: Abby Kalou scored four goals and assisted on three others as the host Patriots (15-1-2 overall, 5-0 North Suburban Conference) won their 10th consecutive game and posted their eighth straight shutout. Goalkeeper Jenny Staten recorded her 12th shutout in 18 appearances this season, and has allowed only five goals. Emma Ramagnano scored two of Stevenson’s five first-half goals. Abby, Nicole Schmidt and Kristin Hill also had goals in the first half. Abby scored three more times in the second half, and Gabi Nyc also scored. Gabi had an assist in the first half. Other assists were registered by Jess Baigorria, Nikki Kolze, Myah Schoolman, Gracie Wingfield and Alyssa Bende. Max Gomez Joining Oregon State Wrestling
Two-time state wrestling tournament qualifier Max Gomez has committed to Oregon State University’s program. The senior posted a 39-10 record at 195 pounds this year and was 75-22 during his final two seasons at Stevenson. Max will be joining a Beaver program that finished third at the Pac-12 Championships and qualified six wrestlers for the NCAA tournament.
Today on NFHS Network
Four athletic events are scheduled to be streamed live today on Stevenson’s NFHS Network page. The varsity and junior varsity boys volleyball matches against Waukegan in the Sports Center will be shown at 6 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. The varsity boys lacrosse game versus Lake Forest in the Stadium starts at 6:30, and the varsity girls lacrosse game at Lake Forest begins at 6:45.

Audition, Crew Information for Fall Play
Forme parte de la obra de teatro de otoño! The Theatre Department is looking for a committed team of actors, designers and technicians to bring next year’s fall play to life at school and on the road. Auditions for “The Transition of Doodle Pequeno” will take place Thursday, May 16, while interviews for crew members and designers will be held Monday, May 13. Audition packets, crew packets, and links to sign up for auditions and crew/designer interviews are available at d125.org/audition. Incoming freshmen are welcome to participate. If you have an AP exam the day after interviews or auditions, and would like to set up an alternate time, contact Ms. Chusid. Also, if you would like to borrow a perusal script, stop by the Black Box Theatre.
